Do you have to pay for transit (bus, train, jeepney, subway etc) where you live?

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada we have to pay $59 per month for a bus pass for the privelege of riding on our public transit system which consists of buses, trolley buses and a light rail transit train that goes from one small part of the city to the other. Single rides cost $2.50 for adults. I personally think it's far too expensive since the schedules are often wrong, buses are overcrowded, a lot of areas of the city have no or very sporadic transit and they don't run as many buses on some routes as they should. It's cheaper to pay the $59 a month if you rely on transit, obviously, but for the service you get it's not really worth it, since you usually end up paying another $20/month in cab fare when your bus doesn't run (as it often doesn't in the wintertime when it's bitter cold outside) or if it comes too early. Do you have to pay to take public transit in your area? Is it worth it?

In New York City, it's 76 dollars per month or $2.00 for a single ride. Since a lot of people rely on mass transit here, it definitely is worth the price. I don't have a car, but when I did, I easily spent more than that on gas in a month. Not to mention car insurance, etc. :) I do however miss the freedom of having a car. Especially when the subway can only get me within many many blocks of my desintation or I need to make several transfers to get where I'm going. But, hey, it's better than nothing.

I had no idea the fare was that high for public transportation. Where I live, there is nothing like that. When I lived in Chicago, I rode the subway downtown everyday to go to work, and It didn't cost much. I used to use loose change to pay for my fare, and I always had plenty of change. My mom used to have some kind of senior citizen discount pass that she could easily afford.

I live near Toronto and it's also $2.50 for adults to take the buss. A monthly pass is $87.50 I believe. Last time I bought one was in august. It is way too much, for my daughter and I to go to the doctors and back it's like $8.00! My doctors is not that far from my house, too far to walk buti think in a cab it's about $5.00 each way.
