When traveling to you use public transport?

We all now how troubling gridlocks and pricey parking tickets can be. Yet for many people using public transport appears to be out of the ordinary. Do you use public transport? If you use it, any special reasons to using it, is it just convenient? If you prefer to use your own vehicle in stead, why don't you choose for public transport? Let's kick off with my own case as an example. As a student I get a free transport card for the weekdays, so public transport when it comes to pricing is a lot more attractive than having to take the car. What also is a great benefit is that although unfortunately on my track there is no railway connection, the bus takes about as long as the car to get into the city. From there though I can take the subway which is a lot faster when it comes to moving throughout the city than with the car. Most days it isn't all too crowded in both the bus and subway so there's plenty of space for sitting down or standing if you prefer. Just in the peak hours it can be cramped in the subway, but of course you do have the choice of waiting for the next as well. The only real downside for me I can think off when it comes to using public transport is that I am limited to times for traveling, fortunately enough these are quite a lot on week days ranging from twice till 4 times an hour on the bus on day-time and once an hour in the evening. So tell us about your case, do you use public transport or would you rather avoid it all costs?

I would like to use public transportation, but neither the city I live in nor the city I go to school in have any sort of bus or subway system. They both think it's a waste of money. However, so many people can't afford, or can barely afford, having their own car, and everything is so far away that walking is usually out of the question. I think that if we implemented a public transportation system in our town, it would help most of the citizens. It's a small town, so it wouldn't take too many buses to have a decent service.

It's a shame that there's no such service available for you. It can be quite convenient for a lot of people and it also is a lot better for the environment than simply letting everybody use their cars, also it'll take a lot of stress of the roads if those are present where you live, by having a lot less cars on the road.

I prefer the use of my vehicle for many reasons: 1)I work in a essential service so I could get called in at any time on my days off and work late will beyond after the last train or bus ceases for the day 2) I find the public transit to really suck in my town IE: waiting for up to 3 maybe 4 trains before there is enough room to get on ( forget about having a seat to sit on).3)the type of people you share a car with IE: body odor, foul language, nasty people who would rather push you out than move in further while you are trying to board. 4) I like my independence and can leave for work 20 mins instead of 1 to 2 hrs prior to starting work.

When being able to get called up at any moment public transport indeed isn't that much of an option anymore unless it'd be a subway connection which pretty much goes every 3 minutes or sooner on average. The second point indeed is something which is something here and in a lot of other countries more should be invested in. We have a couple of lines here which are going super and you can always sit, drives about every 10 minutes or more often, etcetera. But some are going not frequent enough and don't have the required capacity. But it is something which is being worked on here though, not by increasing capacity though but by introducing new ways mainly. Independence indeed true, something which you don't have with public transport. You also can't really stop by somewhere on the way home or so when you're sitting in a bus rather than like you can with a car.

Well I still walk. But nowadays I use bus transport. When I used to eb a student I used to take the bus to college. I have to transfer thru two buses,(one I have to pay except to one unique bus driver, the other is free. So I can only pay 50 cents thru this method; saves me money) to get to college. I still don't like to drive at all not only because my drill-seargeant-like old man made me like it even LESS, but because I might hurt or kill someone. I don't want that on my hands. So in most instances, I will walk. I've walked two or three times to middle school with no success. Then I walked all the way from one county to another, from high school to home the day before graduation day. Then I had to walk home from college to home, but didn't make it. That was when I lost my wallet. (I found it days later in college).

A motorcycle unfortunately doesn't really fit the students budget here :P, there are exceptions but they are pretty rare, hehe. Asides from that obtaining the license is already quite hard on itself. Sort of a shame, since it would be quite cool. Downside though would be the winters and such which here are quite cold and rainy, making lots of distance would probably be a pain in that.

This will be a shorter answer now as something went wrong just now and my long reply was lost :-( I guess the Netherlands are much more pro public transport than over here in the UK. Public transport can work out cheaper than using your own transport (not much cheaper though) but it tends to be unreliable and is not as convenient as driving youself somewhere. I get a student discount where I am but this is a deal worked out between my university and the local bus company - it still doesn't make bus travel very affordable. I would like to use public transport more as it is much better for the environment but for convenience I will have to stick with my car until there is a national effort to improve public transport.

Never used the public transport in the UK, although I have heard how in London it all is quite ok even if it tends to be a bit complicated in the subways. Outside of London though from friends who went to England on holidays they came back with the stories on how they had to wait 3 hours at certain bus stops because the bus would only come once every 4~6 hours or so. National efforts are a nice start, but for Europe I'd even say an international effort would be a great thing. Currently there are a couple of international line like in example Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris and there's an international line from Utrecht to Berlin going from my country, but there definitely should be more. The international lines throughout Europe are even more simple for that matter than the average subway in a city is, just having a couple of destinations in each country directly and all of the sudden you totally have to rely on finding your own way. Let stand the fact that international tickets have to be ordered up front or bought at certain locations. But in the Netherlands we indeed are quite pro public transport, the transport companies and the government are trying to make it as attractive as possible to use. We have hundreds of bus lines in total even if we're just a minor country. For every person there's pretty much 1 or more bus stops within a 2km radius, in the cities that goes down to pretty much a bus stop or any other form of stop for public transport about every 100m or so.

The public transport in the major cities of the UK tends to be pretty good but everywhere else it is very unreliable.

i prefer to use the cycle mostly and for longer trips i use my bike. For its for sure that i will reach thje destination earlier than if i would have taken the bus, so you can easily imagine the condition of bus services out here. And the station is quiet a distance from our house. So, now you may get the picture why i dont use the public transport usually.

Somewhat I can I guess, also seen that sort of problems in countries like Spain and France during holidays. Barely any bus to be seen anywhere, perhaps one day we might see that change making all areas accessible by public transport well and frequent :).

Normally when I’m traveling a long distance I prefer to use public vehicle as I can rest comfortably and enjoy the traveling. At the same time I save petrol and toll as well. If I were to drive a long distance I’ll feel rather tedious and tired and could hardly enjoy any more when I reach the destination.

I own and drive a car. We don't have much for public transportation here, not even buses. So I really don't have much of a choice.

I prefer the convenience of my own transport and try to avoid public transport. However, we did take the children on public transport to make sure they knew how, they take the bus to school (it is too far to walk or cycle) and sometimes when they go out with friends. My husband travels by train sometimes. I have started cycling to work for exercise, the environment and saving money. I wish the public transport systems were better in Britain but they would still have lots of people on them that I would need to share with - I would find that difficult at the moment as I have lost my confidence.

When i'm travelling to work i work as it only takes 15 minutes to get there. If i was going somewhere further it would be the train or bus. I hate buses nowadays because when there is heavy traffic, its best to walk instead. Train is ok at certain times but i hate been crowded in.
