My first question to you is how long has he had these symptoms? I know there are many places that offer free or reduced cost rabies vaccinations. If you have an animal shelter nearby they can probably tell you if there are any rabies clinics planned.

Ok, I'm still looking things up.... I'm assuming he's spends time outside? Did you notice any bites on him before the symptoms started?

I've had to have rabies shots myself! I tried to wiggle out of the shots thinking they'd be those horrible in the stomach things by asking if I could wait and if I showed any symptoms to go to the doctor for the shots then. The Public Health Dept. told me once you start showing symptoms it's too late! I assume the same to be true of animals so in this case if he had rabies you may as well put him down. Agencies generally requires a quarantine period of 10-14 days if an animal has bitten someone. If they show no symptoms within the quarantine period they are considered safely free from rabies. My great dane often foams at the mouth. It's just because he's got a lot of lip, which is correct in a dane, and so his saliva gets worked around into a froth sometimes, especially when he's exerted himself. It's very important that you get him vaccinated. The local Petco here holds low cost vaccination clinics once a month. A licensed vet gives the vaccinations and rabies is only $8 or so if memory serves me. Check to see if anyone has similar services in your area. Contact Animal Control, the animal shelter, ASPCA, or any other animal welfare agency to ask if they know of a low cost service in your area. If all else fails you should call each vet in your area, explain your situation, and ask if there's any way they can let you pay in payments of any kind or what they suggest.

Your dog is more important than any luxury, cable, internet, whatever. When you took him in you took responsibility for his health and wellbeing and it's up to you to fufill it. It's also very important for the wellbeing of your whole family! How awful would it be if your son was exposed to rabies????? Yes, you're doing the right thing by doing whatever you have to do to get him vaccinated!
