I really worry about this time of the year because summer is coming and last year my bill went over $300 per month! One of my friends said she gets bills for $800 :0 I always turn all the lights off, and keep my air at 85 degrees in the day and at night 82 degrees, I have a 3 bedroom brick house but the living room is pretty big, I live in Phoenix, Az. and wonder why they charge so much to live here?
One of my neighbors got into a bit of money trouble and they turned her power off but they put a special thing on her electric box so she could have 10 amps per day because she has three little kids but what really Got Me is they charged her and extra $250 for the thing they put on the box!!! And this would last for 14 days! What in the world?? If she could have paid $250 her lights would still be on! I just don't understand it? Do you have problems like this in your state?? How high is your electric bill?

I'm not looking forward to this summer - being in Southern California makes it bad enough (heat wise) but then where I am located is very close to the desert so it's even hotter in my city. The only good thing is that we are nestled in a little valley area with small mountains around us so the wind sorta swoops down and cools things just a little (at times) but our electric bill is still pretty high in the summer - not as high as you though!
I'm curious what your bills right now are like. My bill for the past two months has been $64 a month. No complaints from me. I use my heater when it gets too cold and my air when it gets too hot. The weather can't seem to make up it's mind at the moment.
I cannot really remember how much my summer bill was but I want to say it was about $150 - give or take $20. I am hot blooded and need the air on ALL the time in the summer. Everyone says I live in an icebox and they actually have to put on sweaters when they come to my house in the summer. I keep the temp at about 65-67 in the summer. I know those who are 'going green' are going to have a heart attack over that, but I can not function in the heat at all.
BUT I will add that I'm trying to slowly raise the temp because I know our state is always at risk for blackouts. I also do all of my laundry and stuff like that late at night to help.
I can't believe that whole thing that happened to your friend. Seems a bit crazy!

How big is your place? I'm curious because I live in Florida and during the summer last month with our a/c set at 78 it was still around $400 a month. At 78 we are sweating but we can't afford to go any lower on it not at these prices. Worst part is we are with one of the cheaper companies in the state. Now that is frightening.

Yikes! I couldn't handle a $400 a month electric bill during the summer - that's just insane. You must have a large 2 level home?
I live in a single story, approx. 1800 sq ft home.
I tend to keep everything dark in the summer months. All of the blinds are closed - doors all open in the house so the air circulates. We do not use any lights during the day and only for a few hours at night because of the time change and the sun being out longer. No in-out stuff. You either go out and stay out .. or you come in and stay in. We use our washer/dryer and things like that in the evening when most people are in bed. We do not watch a ton of TV. I spend most of my time on the computer or out doing something else (shopping etc). The only thing we really use alot in the summer is our air conditioning but we try to up it each year a little more (meaning we try to handle a little more heat each summer). We do alot of outdoor cooking on the grill too. Every little bit helps!

Hi:) My bill for the last few cooler months ran about $120 to $130 depending on the amount of washing I do..This is not to bad..I have a bad time with the heat and stay inside during the summer when it hits 115 degrees I just Hate it!! It makes me feel ill.. I grew up in Flagstaff, Az. and I really miss it..I am trying to get a job transfer there, I would probably freeze now that I have been here so long but I would put on a coat and think of all the money I am saving! I try too do my laundry late at night when I can. I could not believe it when my friend told me this!! I was shocked! She got help from the Salvation Army. I told her if it happened again to please tell me so she and her children could stay here with me..I would hate for anyone to be without power in this heat..

When I used to live in Texas (until about a year ago) my electric bills (on a three-bedroom split-level house) used to run between about $200 in the winter, and $700 in the summer. The highest was $800+ following one August where it was 100+ virtually every day... and unlike the Phoenix area, the humidity would hang around in the 80% range. I was never any "good at" being hot, so I tended to keep the house at around 75-76 degrees so I could keep myself from constantly sweating.
Now I live in a comparable house in western Washington, and my HIGHEST electric bill is about $50 less than my LOWEST electric bill was during the eight YEARS I lived in that house in Texas. The bill here is typically about $150 in the winter (when there's some heating included) and $75 in the summer (since there's no A/C needed).

Thank you so much for your reply! I am not good at the heat at all! I spend most of my time inside until the winter.. I think I want to move to Washington now! It just seems all I do is give all my money to the Electric company :(

Our electricity in South Africa has given me so many financial headaches. They either forget to charge for the electricity, or they don't charge for the water. They miss meter readings and just take an average. I never know what to expect when opening the bill. Our electric bill last winter went up to over R3000,($430). At that time there were 3 adults and 2 children living here. Our neighbours have 3 small children, and she uses her tumble dryer almost daily, and their bills were R900, ($120) per month. How they justified that one I do not know.

Way back during the 1960's, electricity here in my country is one of the cheapest in the world but because of some major changes the government did, now it is one of the most expensive in the world. It is really crazy, hwy we can't totally enjoy the benefits of having a cheap electricity.
specially now that it is summer. and you want to use more of air conditioner but you just don't want to waste much of that energy.
anyways, my electricity is sky rocketing now a days because it is so damn hot...

Our hydro bill is not sooo bad here. We heat with fuel oil and that is expensive too. We have no need of A/C Doesn't get hot enough to warrant putting one in.
Those that heat with electricity are complaining lots. Really high.
I know our local Canadian Legion (a non profit orginazation) had a Hydro bill over $5,000.000 (yes that is 5 thousand dollars) We can't afford to pay and may lose everything. No funding or anything available to help us.
It is bad when people can't afford to pay for hydro when itis such a necessity to every day life.
We all have the same prob no matter where we live

Hey.. you can't complain - at least you have free medical insurance and you get 6 months off with pay when you have children, including the dad's too.
:]
(my stats for that might be wrong, I'm going by memory of something I heard awhile back)
I'm just playing of course but I couldn't help thinking when you wrote about how high your hydro bills are that you're lucky that you live in Canada because of all the great benefits you get compared to the U.S.
Hope this past winter wasn't too bad for you!

Hello, cookiewookie,I had ever paid an electricity bill for 1200 in a quarter, that mean it is 300 dollars in one month, I had compared the bills with other people who get same size in household, they paid 300 for a quarter. I did not know what went wrong actually but it was winter at that time and we did not use any heaters.Hot water might not be consumed too much, I wonder there was any problems for the meter, may be the staff misread the reading, but i had ringed up the customer service, they told me I was priced correctly.:(

The highest my electric bill was about $205. We don't use our central heat and air, but rather use portable air conditioners and heaters in two of our three bedrooms. We'll use them only when needed (like at night when it's too cold or during the day when it's too hot). During the cold weather we build fires in our fireplace when we are in the other parts of the house and when it's too hot we resort to going into the bedrooms, only going out into the other rooms when necessary. I don't like doing it this way, but it's better than having the electric bill be sky high. :P
By the way, my low end was about $37 last spring. The weather was where we didn't need heaters or air conditioners so that is why our bill was so low. I wish we could get it that low again. I was definitely a nice surprise when I got this bill. I certainly never expected it!

mine's been as high as $600-which is ridiculous in my opinion.that's with conserving power.
my area constantly has brown outs too-they keep adding homes to the existing grid, and it just can't take it.

I live in Alabama and yes I dread getting our electric bills during the summer. We have two window unit air conditioners in our house. I don't turn them on during the day until it starts getting pretty warm. Sometimes we sleep with both on all night and sometimes not. It just depends on how hot it is in the house.

I live in a two bedroom total electric townhouse and I'm paying about 300.00 a month. So it's pretty much what your paying, as soon as it gets a little warmer here and I start using my central air I'll be paying over 300.00 as well. Good luck.

In my situation, the electric bill is higher in autumn and spring than is in summer and winter because in spring and autumn it's getting cold and i have to use some electric heat source. An electric heat source consume about 2 kW/hour and it is used in autumn and spring. An air conditioning source consume about 1kW/hour and i use it only in summer. In winter don't have to use nothing because i have heat from the central plant of the block.

Yes, the electricity bill is high in Germany, too. The next bill will be even higher, they are raising prices again.
A couple of years ago the electricity company was owned by the government, bills were high then and now that it is a private company the cost is outragious.
The ownly thing one can do to lower the bill is to comsume less.

Here in Iowa my electric bill doesn't go much above $75. That is in the summer time when I have to run the AC. My heating bill runs a bit higher using gas in the winter time. It gets to be about $100 at the highest.

I live in Florida and right now our electric bill is running around $180 for our house. We already have been having to have the a/c on some days and if not that the house fan. We cut down everywhere we can but it still doesn't help much. Last summer we had one month that was about $500 and we got rid of our chest freezer. That helped but our bill the next month was still around $400. We checked with our neighbors and theirs was running about the same as ours each month. Our rates here are horrible.

well for me, i consider our electric bill high enough because the value of our currency is not that high as dollars. but we reach over a thousand pesos for energy alone but when converted to dollars, of course, it becomes lesser.

well i m from Pakistan.. the same problem is here regarding the over charged electricity bills... u are complaining about getting $300 per month but here it is so worse that power company shuts down electricity for more than 5 hours when there is so hot that temperature reaches 120F, and thats without any pre-described notice.. now aren't you good over there that u get electricity 24 hours , 24/7
