Do you use/trust Wikipedia?

Hello everyone. I've been using Wikipedia for a while as my source for my assignments, projects and reports. I believe that it is still reliable despite it is open for editing by anyone. I believe that concerned citizens undo wrong changes which preserves its reliability despite of vandalism attacks. Also, I consider it better tha other encyclopedias because if there is an error in a published issue of Britannica or Grolier, it can't be edited until next printing unlike in Wikipedia in which you can correct facts or typos.
Anyway, do you trust Wikipedia?

hi mik0930
If you are thinking about using Wikipedia as a source for assignments then I think you need to be careful. What I do is to get the information from Wiki, and then double check it somewhere else and use that as a source. Most lecturers at Higher Education level will not really accept it as a reliable source, so it is best to use something more acceptable to get a better mark. However, I do agree with you that it is reliable on the whole. The best thing to do is to just use it as a place to start, and not a place to quote from. Hope this helps. Good luck with your studies.

I do not usually use wikipedia for my schoolworks such as assignments, lab repots, projects, etc. I believe that wikipedia and other online sources only propagate plagiarism. I know alot of people who just copy stuffs from wikipedia and paste it in their assigments. It's sad to note that instead of helping the students to learn, these things, do the other way...they do not contribute to the learnings of students.

Wikipedia is open-source so we cannot really credit that it's error-free and in fact it contains a lot of errors not only in facts but also in grammar. But we cannot the fact that it is very useful in our everyday life. Even though there are some errors in it, most facts are accurate.

i use wikipedia for personal use only. but not for assignments for school. i still would go to other sites for that. but wikipedia would be like my third or fourth option of no one else would be able to offer any solution for me.

I use Wikipedia for really minor homework like getting the definitions of something. But if I had to do a research paper or some major paper like that, I search other sites, especially .edu ones. They're the more reliable types. Sometimes I check the contents of Wikipedia against some other websites, just to be sure. If I had to cite the resources, I almost never use Wikipedia, but sometimes it's the only site that has that particular information so I have no choice.

I never expected a concept like Wikipedia to work, but I have used it to get lotsa info I need and find it quite reliable. Wikipedia has some self moderation too and most inaccuracies are corrected soon.
I do tend to cross-check the details if I have a doubt though.

I use Wikipedia a lot for personal use, and I use parts of articles in there for blog posts sometimes.
I wouldn't use it for school assignments though, because there are times where parts may be wrong. In saying that though, I love that you can find an article on just about ANYTHING on Wikipedia.
I've found articles of areas in there that I never thought I'd find. I like searching for random things on there sometimes too when I have nothing else to do.

I use it, but sparingly. I prefer to use it as a source for basic information or facts, and definitely things I can double check. I avoid it for more controversial topics however, because some of the articles are definitely biased, which could throw off the accuracy of an assignment.

Yes, Wikipedia can be considered reliable, but only as far as general research is involved. It will be better to use other sources for intensive researches. Rather than using wikipedia as an end in itself, we should just consider using it as a steping point for further research. Wikipedia is good at offering extensive information on a wide range of topics, but lacks the intensiveness. Use it as a guiding point, a place to get a rough idea of where to go afterwards. Wikipedia provides links for deeper researches.

I personally don't trust wikipedia, I've looked at it from time to time to get a basic understanding of things, but have often found myself going elsewhere. The main deterrent for me is the fact that it's an editable online resource that can be changed by anyone that wants to and so quite frankly what you could be dealing with on there is a pile of cack.
The best way to go is books and reputable websites that can be successfully referenced through say the harvard referencing system which is recognised by most if not all institutions of education. That way credit goes where credit's due in terms of factual information.

well, wikipedia is an open-source encyclopedia. but it never hurts to double-check with other sources. It being an open-sourced encyclopedia doesn't necessary mean it isn't prone to errors.
i've used it too most of the time when doing school works, and i must say information in there is 98% accurate.
see? we still have 2% left for errors ;)

I use wikipedia, but I don't base anything from it in any report I write. Simply for setting up a global layout I pick up the main terms and from that either dive into my books or go searching on in example UpToDate, BMJ or The Lancet which are all 3 valid resources for my studies.

yes i trust wikipedia. I use wikipedia for my assignments, reports, projects or or just looking for info about some other things that might intereret me. When i do some research, wikipedia is not my only source, i tend to search for other sites that i might i need in my research. Wikipedia rocks, and its free! Its too detailed and the people who edit the articles put some resources too, to where they got the info they are putting.

wikipedia is a fantastic encyclopedia but i don't say to trust fir any college work or school. You can search for anything if you have doubts and you can use wikipedia as reference for your project. just extract useful information from wikipedia and use it in your own way.

uia in Portuguese for some time now and never had any problems. Usually I use it just to fill my "personal knowledge gaps", but I have already used it in school and college papers and till now no problems with it.
