Buying dogs as presents is not a good idea. Are you sure your brother even wants the dog? Is your family ready to take care of this animal for a decade or longer?
Instead of giving him a dog, maybe give him an "IOU" and let him help research the best breed of dog for your family and then go to a responsible breeder or the animal shelter and pick out the dog together.
There is a reason there are so mnay unwanted animals in this world. People who recieve dogs as presents are less likely to keep them than a person who did lots of research.

Unfortunately this person is probably very correct in what they have written. You are to be commended for thinking of your brother. Talk it over with him and your parents. I can't remember where it was but there use to be a site that you answered questions and they helped you pick the best breeds for your lifestyle and needs. Then the recommended the sites with information related to said breeds and then you needed to research rescue or breeder.

It must be a great idea to gift your brother a puppy as a birthday gift. I am not a dog expert (though a dog lover), but, for me it must be Dalmatian - they look so beautiful.
But I must agree each dog has its own beauty and uniqueness, and usually turns out to be your best companion, if you offer little attention to them.

Why dont you just ask him in conversation what sorts of dogs he likes. I own Dobermans but I would not recommend getting one. It all depends on what size you want, how much you want to pay, the time to spend with it and much youactually know about dogs. There is so much to think about. The only dogs that comes to mind is a Greyhound or a Labadore/Retriever. They are both gentle natured.

I have two Yorkshire terriers and they are so smart, loving and good companions, they can take care of your house and keep intruders away ´cause they bark a lot, they don´t each much and fi, t perfectly in an apartment, it depends if you like big or small dogs, for small they are one of the best.

I have two dogs. One is a pug and one is a chihuahua. These dogs are both very good companion dogs. Pugs are good with kids, but chihuahuas are not. I have older children so the dogs are fine and they do get along with each other. I happen to like smaller dogs myself, but if you want to get a bigger dogs, labs make wonderful pets as do golden retrievers.

The last dog I had was a black and white Border Collie (the type used to round up sheep). I found she was very intelligent (only took me 20 minutes to teach her how to walk on the leash), and great with the kids. Very gentle.
When I was a kid we had a German Shepherd and whilst many people are afraid of these dogs, we got ours as a puppy, treated him well and he was as gentle as a lamb.

I am a big fan of golden retrievers or because of their very friendly and protectice nature (especially towards children) and attractive appearance. If I was to buy a dog I would buy that breed. My last dog was a rotweiler. Many people say that that's an agressive breed, but I think that all depends on the owner. If you take care and show love for your dog, it really doesn't matter what breed you buy. You're always gonna get a friendly, lovable pet. I would never buy someone a live animal as a present though without consulting them. Perhaps they already have some preferences for the type of breed or perhaps they want a cat instead :P. The gift is very individual. Consult the parents also if you haven't done so already. They might have mixed feelings about it and also some preferences, like not wanting a very hairy or a very "drooling" dog breed. All the best!
