Will it be rewarding if i build a computer?

I'm sure it will be, just to have learned and completed the task. This is something thats been in the back of my mind for a couple years now. While i'm not really in need of a new computer I've always thought my next one would be a desktop and that when the time came to get one i would consider building it. First of all, is it cheaper? Is it a reasonable project for someone with no experience? After the fact is the knowledge really worth having? I have these questions because time is a big factor. When do i have time to build a computer.. is like a summer project? Something i can finish in a month while in school? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I always build my computers. It's not very hard. The biggest part is to screw the motherboard into the case and putting the CPU on the motherboard. Theses are the only two things with some difficulties. I do think it's cheaper, but it's not my principal motive to do it. I do it because I can chose the components that I put into my computer. If you got all the components, building it will take at most half a day. If you want some advice, be extra careful when you put the CPU heatsink and Fan on your CPU. Maybe ask someone to do it in your place.

About the cooler, I always use the normal ones (fan + heatsink). Water cooling is for hard core overclocker and can be messy. I don't really want water near any of my components. What if there is a leak ?

Okay good advice. So your saying that i don't want to get too fancy here because I don't sound like an overclocker/ those guys who go to lan parties and need to show off. Well your right. What are your thoughts on linux vs. windows?

Building a pc can be very rewarding. Its not difficult once you have the various components in front of you, i.e motherboard, graphics card, dvd drives etc. The most difficult thing involved would be connecting all the components up with the right cables but thats made even easier these days with SATA. It will be cheaper if you buy the components online and you can also look around on forums for help if you get stuck. Linux is not as popular as windows for many reasons. Windows is easier to install and operate but Linux has less security concerns attached with it. Good luck with your pc building!

Thanks for the reply. Have you ever built a pc for yourself? If so would you mind sharing the total cost?

I hate Linux, but I will still disagree on one account. Linux is just as easy to install as Windows. Using it, and installing hardware and popular programs, is extremely difficult.

I have been building PCs for years and I consider it very rewarding. As for your first question, the answer is sometimes. If you are building a budget PC, branded PCs are usually cheaper. You can't build a computer with a monitor for $299 without using crappy parts or a pirated operating system. If you are building a gaming PC, and have a budget around $1000, you will save big time. A branded gaming PC will cost over $2000 for a half decent machine. The knowledge is also worth having. If anything goes wrong, you will know enough about your machine to fix it yourself. Time is a little tougher. I can build a computer and install all the necessary programs in half a day. For a beginner, I can't say how long it will take you. Have an experienced person help you out if possible. I don't recommend Linux. Getting a Linux system up and running can take me about 3 days depending on how hard it is to find drivers for hardware. For a beginner, you may spend a month ripping your hair out trying to get it running right. Remember, time is money and if it's taking you a month it's not free. On a final note, MyLot is a great place, but it's not a tech support forum. Be careful about the advice you get here. I'm a professional, but there are a lot of people who give advice that have no computer knowledge whatsoever. I have seen some horrible computer advice given on this forum, and there's no way to differentiate a good answer from a bad one since MyLot doesn't show you how good, or how poorly an answer is rated. In tech support forums like www.hardwareanalysis.com you can just post your needs and your budget, and people can give you many suggestions on specifically what parts you should buy.

I have Never Built one but I would imagine that it would be pretty cheap to do so since you can look around for the Cheapest Price. I Think I might go ahead and build one for the heck of it and since I have nothing going on I will.lol Well good luck and It should not be hard at all to do. Have a Good Day

It's not like you build anything, you just put it together. Get a list of needed things, any hardware or tech forum will be able to help you with that judging by your needs and price class. Then you just stick the cards into the right slots basically and such, nothing much about it. I reconfigure my systems a lot and set up mine myself, takes me about 15 minutes to put together then installing windows about a minute or 30, so goes quite fast. When doing it for the first time might take some more time but not much. Saving money I'd say it doesn't really matter too much these days, unless you buy certain brands in high price classes. Otherwise about 50 Eur or so which is about the standard cost to stick a custom system together.

Wow thanks sounds very realistic. Another thing i'm thinking about is while i'm putting together my computer would i want to go all the way and put together my OS. What are your thoughts on linux? I guess what your saying also is that everything can be purchased over the net so it should be convenient right?
