At what age do babies start trying to say actual words and understand what baba, dada and mama means? My 10 month old waves and says bye bye when we say bye bye and calls her daddy dada but she wont call me mama...she says it a lot but I don't think she knows to associate that word with me, however she knows that the dog is pup pup. How old do they start trying to say bigger words and know what the words mean?

My daughter is 16 months old and says about ten words. I read to her often and we speak to her constantly. I think she'll say more when she's ready. I know she knows more than she's saying. For instance, when I'm setting the table for dinner, I'll tell her to get her milk. She'll go get it and wait by her highchair. I think I feel more comforted by the fact I know she understands basically what we're saying. From what I hear, all kids are different so don't feel pressured by the milestone markers. We are all individuals.

I know I'm really bad about all the milestone charts that I find. I read way too far into them and I get worried when she's not doing what it says RIGHT when it says she should. I'm getting a lot better about it but a few months ago I was really bad. I know they're all different and they'll do it when they're ready but it's hard not to be paranoid when there's all these people telling you how "their" kids did it sooner and there's charts everywhere.

its always dada!! lol. I stay at home with my kids and still the first few words were dada. the only advice I can give to you it talk to her. we talked to my daughter a lot, and not baby talk, regular talk and we read books a lot. we pointed to everything in the books and told her what it was. she started talking a little after a year..by 18 months she was talking at a 5 year old level. Every kid is different though, but i truely believe if you spend time reading and talking that they pick it up faster.

Yeah I read to her everyday and talk to her all day long so I was hoping she would get an early start since she hears talking all the time. Yesterday she tried to say the doggie's name and was consintrating so hard on how my mouth was moving to say it and today she said eddie (it's Ellie but close enough). I just wasn't sure how old they were when they started understanding what each word means because It seems like she says a lot of words at the right time.
And WHY is it that she says DADA first?! I'm the one that's always with her!

My daughter turned 1 yesterday and at her Dr appt today I was told that she should be saying 3-5 real words by the time that she's 15 months old. I think I read that they can start talking from 10-18 months. My daughter doesn't say any real words yet. She understand what we say to her sometimes and will babble and we thought she was saying hi while she was waving, but I don't really think she saying hi for real. I think it was just babble. Her Dr said that if she's not saying th 3-5 words in the next 3 months to bring her back in for a checkup.

My 6 mos. old son can say words like ada, ama, aja, aba & he knows how to scare people. Ada, his referring to me and ama is for his mom. We came out of this idea because one time he was lying on the bed and we are in the front of PC doing myLot and he was yelling adadada....adadada... My wife took him but he didn't stop yelling adadada... And when they got near to me he was trying to reach for me while yelling adadada...
We found out about his scaring tricks with this one time that he and her mom was having a fight. My wife yelled at him and he started growling like an angry dog. And after that when we are telling him to scare someone, he'll do it.
