In the last year the price of fruit and vegies in Australia has sky rocketed. A year ago you could get for example a lettuce for around $1.40 and a kilo of good tomatos for $1.80 a kilo. Apples and oranges could range from 99 cents to $2 a kilo....now we are looking at $7 a kilo for tomatos and $4 for a lettuce, apples and oranges are around $5 per kilo. Yes we are having a drought and there are other problems for farmers but are any others out there struggling to make ends meet and eat healthy at the same time???

The prices of vegetables and fruits here in my country are somewhat lower compare to your countries. The kilos of tomatoes is $.34, while the lettuce is about $3. But imported fruits like apple, grapes and oranges is somewhat expensive. Some local vegetables and fruits are much lower but the most expensive here in my country is meat, fishes and seafoods. The cost of living is already low but there are still families that dont eat 3X a day because the low wage salary. I am somewhat off topic, but i've to say in my family we could still manage to make ends meets and eat inexpensive nutritious food.

banana - it costs 13 dollars per kilo few months ago
Hello, chileman,it seems that there are no signs the prices of vegetables and fruits will be decreased as drought continues.I think it is even more expensive in sydney than in brisbane.I could still remember how much was one kilo of banana costs in few months ago, it was 13.00 dollars,I was wondering whether those usual banana eaters would continue to eat or not at that time.

I agree chileman! When I did my detox diet I had to buy lots more vegies than normal, and it was so expensive! Plus I feel extra ripped off because the fruit and veg here just isn't as good as in New Zealand, the normal australian tomatoes have no flavour, and to buy the gourmet or vine ripened ones (which aren't much better to be honest) is way more expensive. And every summer I get excited when strawberries become available...only to remember that they also aren't as good as the ones in NZ. I guess it's just what you're used to, but after 3 years I would've thought I would be used to it by now! I also get annoyed at paying $5/6 a kilo for apples, only to find out that they're all bruised or fluffy tasing :(
