cause of mid-air collisions

when i was a kid, i always loved watching airplanes fly high in the skies. probably one of the reasons why Top Gun is one of my all-time fav movies. but as i was growing up, i wondered why mid-air collisions happen. heck! the skies are too big for accidents to occur!
but a few days ago, i stumbled on this picture. i guess this explains it all.. c",)

awws. could it be so? you really see that the radar is having its fun during the photo session? nice of you to have seen that. your imagination is so rich.
