Is it possible for my phone to spy on me?

Okay here is my story. I had my cellular (mobile) phone turned towards my face. It is a flip phone and it was closed. It has a camera on the outside. I wasn't use it. Then I saw what appeared to be a little red flash from it. I am not concerned. Is it possible for my phone to spy on me? Could it be recording every move I make? Do you think it's taking pictures of me? Is it recording every move, conversation, text message, and even more? Is it possible for the phone company to spy? I am just curious, let me know.

Thank you, yea I have seen it do the flash many times. My camera phone doesn't have a flash so that is why I am wondering why I see that red flash on there. There is nothing in the manual about anything like that so I am just curious :D.

Update: I have turned off the GPS tracking. It says that 911 (emergency number) will only be able to track me, and so far I haven't seen that red flash. Perhaps that is why? :). Thanks a lot you all.

I don't think your phone is taking pics of you but it may be transmitting your movements. Most new phones have built-in transmitters that relay your personal profile to recievers. There are places where, if you are walking through a mall for example, that you may be greeted by an electronic voice welcoming you to come into that store. If you are carrying your sisters phone you may be greeted as her.

Yea, that is freaky, I would want to turn that service off, and I think I turned the GPS location off (except for the emergency number). I didn't like seeing that red blinking and it was getting me paranoid.
Thank you for your comments.

Sounds like you might have either turned on the camera and didn't turnit off. then you hit a button and it went off.
You might wanna read your manual.

Thank you for your response. I am not sure about that because if you hit the camera when it is closed the screen on the outside will show that it is on. Since my camera on the phone doesn't have a flash, I was wondering why I would be seeing a red light from the phone. It was kind of creepy. I looked in the manual but it doesn't say anything about it.

Yes, that is what I was thinking. Since my phone doesn't come with a flash I am wondering what it could be. Since phones come with GPS tracking to support emergency calls, that got me thinking if it is possible for the phone companies to spy on us such as monitoring our cameras, text messages, phone calls, and recording us through the camera. :X.
