All my friends here on MyLot knows how I feel about the crime rate in my country, and that it is a very serious situation, BUT I could not resist smiling at this incident.
If only all the crime stories could be like this one, read and, although the poor thing has my sympathy, it sure made me smile!) And I quote:
"Johannesburg - A gang hijacked a man and forced him to take them to his home where they superglued him to an exercise bicycle and robbed him on Wednesday, said Johannesburg paramedics.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said the man, in his 50s, was hijacked in Bryanston and forced at gunpoint to take his attackers to his home in Midrand.
"The victim was then forced to strip, after which he was superglued to the seat of an exercise bicycle, his hands were superglued, as were his feet and then his mouth was superglued shut," said Stokoe.
The attackers, dressed in suits and armed with handguns and what appeared to be an automatic assault rifle, ransacked the house and safe "while helping themselves to Chivas Regal and the like".
Stokoe said the attack took place about 12:30 and the man was rescued when his partner arrived home about three hours later.
"Chemicals were used in combination with Vaseline to crystallize and help loosen the superglue.
Netcare 911 staff including one of the trauma support counsellors were on scene for some time helping the victim and his partner."
un quote: How about that, helping themselves to the good stuff, why not take it with! and since when do you get dressed in a suit to go out on a robbery, this can only happen in my beloved country!

Perhaps I am just not in the frame of mind to laugh about such things. Can you imagine yourself as that victim? I don't think it would be funny at all.
I know you are trying to make light of this. But it just doesn't feel right..

You know, in the USA there is a NY newspaper and I cannot remember which one it is because I read a lot. They regularly print about crime...funny things about crime...stupid things robbers do and somehow, we get a chuckle out of it. Why? Because there are far worse crimes being committed in our country that we cannot laugh at. Take for example comedies that have criminal scenes in them. We laugh at them all the time. Nobody says, yes this is a comedy but I cannot laugh at this crime. They laugh. We can say it is not real because it is a movie, but chances are somewhere in this life, bits and pieces of it were real before being put in a movie.

I am sorry to hear that, my friend. Now I have to say instead that you have every right to laugh about this incident - since you were "there" yourself.
Where I am staying, it is indeed one of the safest (supposedly) places in the world. I am appalled enough by the "several" crimes being committed. I already wince each time I read such news on the papers. I think I would be horrified if I was staying where you are.
Migrate?
PS.: The apology is mine to offer.

Yes.... You are hitting it squarely on the nail, and believe you me, here in SA we can do with a laugh or two, when it comes to crime. We all are punch-drunk, except the frigging government, they are completely out of touch with the people that voted for them, so they can live in luxury, and safety.
I can't hire 10 bodyguards to protect myself, but our tax money is paying for their bodyguards!

Ha HA I saw this one, the poor man was quite rattled. If you look at some of the other crimes this one is a huge joke, and he can thank his lucky stars he is still alive!

Annie, I had no idea Superglue worked that well. I am not aware of anything like this happening in the USA. Not saying we aren't a creative bunch. We are, but I think most people believe Superglue is for small areas. Now, all the thieves of the USA are thanking Annie for her help. God bless you, Annie.

Yes.... You telling me! Superglue, will never be the same!
I hope one of their pro's or marketers see that article, but all jokes aside, there is a product that developed itself out of the toolbox into the crime world. Cable ties, so who knows what the next step will be for Superglue! lol

When Superglue gets wind of this, you are going to see some funny commericals.

I don't really know what to say - I am so shocked. It must be terrible to live in such a place. I hope you manage to emigrate soon. I just wanted you to know that I had read your discussion and that my thoughts are with you. I am not a praying person but I hope SA gets sorted out so that all people there can live in peace and not in fear. Likewise throughout the world. I am so lucky to live here (in England) where all we really have to moan about is the weather.

Not to sound pessimistic, but I think it will take a very, very long time. The whole of Africa is in great turmoil. Hunger, poverty, with crime and political corruption first on the agenda, and in that light, SA is just following.
My daughter emigrated to the UK in 1996, thank God for that, because career wise there is nothing going for young people here.
Thank you very much for your interest. xx
