This is for broadband connection, though it may work for dial-up. Let's regain the 20% of the current bandwidth that Windows has allotted for the system. It will help a lot for your downloading speed. Here's how to get it back: 1) Logged on as "Administrator" 2) Click Start, then Run, then type GPEDIT.MSC 3) Expand the "Local Computer Policy" branch. 4) Expand the "Administrative Templates" branch. 5) Expand the "Network" branch. 6) Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window 7) In right windows double-click the "Limit Reservable Bandwdith" setting. 8) On setting tab check the "Enabled" item. 9) Where it says "Bandwidth limit %" set it to 0 "ZERO" Effect is immediate on some systems, some need to reboot. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, programs can request up to 20% of the bandwidth be reserved for them, even with QoS disabled.

it's not possible to get more out of your internet then your provider let's you. lots of people think this is the case with this trick. second, from what i know, this trick only works on win XP PRO! and i suggest to everybody to do this trick. the option is really there for xp to take 20% of your bandwith, so there might be times when he takes it! and an OS should never be able to decide for himself if it drains your bandwith that you pay for! this trick can't do harm, so it's wise to do it, even if it doesn't give any improvement.

Well...ok a lot of people think that disabling or making it to 0% would increase the net speed....but its not true at all...its just a myth....See it on your own http://www.tweakxp.com/article37125.aspx and its a very reputed website....even i havent seen any boost in net speed after disabling QoS!

and yeah this is also mentioned in microsoft's website!! http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316666 here is a excerpt from the website There have been claims in various published technical articles and newsgroup postings that Windows XP always reserves 20 percent of the available bandwidth for QoS. These claims are incorrect. The information in the "Clarification about QoS in end computers that are Running Windows XP" section correctly describes the behavior of Windows XP systems.

see, disabling this wouldt boost your INTERNET CONNECTION but its just to maximize your INTERNET BANDWIDTH, like if your connection is just a dialup, you cant actually use all those bandwidth to 56kbps, you can only use around 20-50kbps of it. -better to disable it, its just the same as setting it to 0, hehe
