Why do you think our needs never end?Why do we want what we want?

I know it may feel absurd at first. But if you give it a thought you will realise what I mean.Just detach yourself and see objectively. You might find it strange the way we keep on wanting one thing after the other. Do you feel we can reduce our needs and still can be happy? In order to lead our lives,we do require different things at different stages....Okay, agreed!! But then it doesn't stop here.We tend to pile up tons of other materials which we don't really require and most of us end up being just consumers rather than producers (Not physical products). What do you think? Why our needs never end? The things that you want.Do you know why you want them?

MAN AS A BIOLOGICAL BEING HAS NEVER ENDING NEEDS UNTIL HE/SHE ACHIEVES SELF-ACTUALIZATION. ACCORDING TO ABRAHAM MASLOW, THERE ARE KNOWN HIERARCHY OF NEEDS EACH STAGE MUST BE MET, IT IS A PREREQUISITE TO TO THE PROCEEDING STAGE. PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS IS THE FIRST STAGE WHERE IT COMPOSES OF THE BASIC NEEDS FOOD, WATER, CLOTHE, AND HOUSE. SECOND IS SECURITY NEEDS IT INVOLVES BEING SECURED FROM NOXIOUS ENVIRONMENT. 3RD, THE LOVE AND BELONGINGNESS, the need to be loved and have sense of belongingness. AND 4TH IS SELF ACTUALIZATION THE TOPMOST PEAK WHERE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE NEEDS ARE MET.

No. We are imperfect humans who hanker after perfection. As long as we stay human, we will never feel satisfied. There will always be things we want and need and once we get them, more will miraculously come into sight. If one succeeds is feeling totally satisfied and at peace with everything, then he is no more human.

Right.Isn't it amazing how this chain seems to be unending.I mean we don't even have to make an effort to think of a new need.

I get your point and I think that it is human nature to desire for more...I think we should realize that their are more important things than being too materialistic...

I do see the trend you are talking about. You finally get your new car, house, etc but then you want a better car, or a bigger house. We can be happy with our needs met. I am happy. I want a house. A simple house that is mine, with a yard for my kids and dog. That's it. That will be my last want in life. (materialistic anyway) Most of the time, people think if only they made more money, everything would be perfect. Well then they make more money and just spend more money. I know many people like this, that just end up in greater debt, etc. I learned my lesson many moons ago, and I think both my husband and myself are content right where we are. I have never been a materialistic person, and I think that has helped me greatly in my adult life.

yes , what you want to talk is really true ..i also get the trend you are talking about ..so many people are materialistic .hot persuit material gains.. including me .i also have such defect ...satisfy with myself ..to be a christian maybe can help lots people become happier and live a life with content .. it's really absurd to complain all the things around you . so many people asess their suceess in terms of money ..they think mony is everything , the foundation of comfortable life ..actually .they wrong . momey just the common medium exchang and s symbol indicating our effort and labour .. the philosophy of life is very important for people to understand what life is .how can we cultivate the right attitude to face our life ...

You are so very kind. The need to make lots of people happier by our efforts is one need which should stay alive till it achieves its purpose. The need to cultivate the right attitude to face and lead life is another very correct need, put forth by you. Thanks kikisam

It depends on individual satisfaction level. If you just control your satisfaction and eager then i think this world will be a best place to live. But due to this eager and disatisfaction this getting worse and there is lots of crime.

Right. Most of the times it is the society that makes you go for things you practically may not be requiring at all.We must train ourselves to be contented.A cure for many evils prevalent in the society. Thanks for the sharing your good thoughts khushi.

There are two types of needs.First ,there are basic needs, which ought to be fulfilled. Then there are luxurious needs, which we realise after our basic necessities are met. Agreed that these needs can be controlled, but then it is in the nature of man to explore and achieve what we dont have. I personally dont feel there is anything wrong with it, but then one should realise the importance of what we already have, and strive for what we want without being greedy. If our needs come to an end, it would mean all of us are satisfied, which would ultimately lead to a perfect world, where there would be no room left for improvement .Lol!

I think the root of the issue is humans have an inherent need to be spiritually engaged, to be wanted, to be accepted and feel that they are who they were meant to be... in short a human's number one need is that sense of belonging in this world. You removed that and it can make the most veteran happy person miserable. As we go through different trials and experiences in life, it's a need that has to be fought for because we feel our lives must have purpose. When we think we're losing all or part of that purpose, we start to (or at least attempt to) accumulate anything tangible that we think would have meaning to us to fill that void. So sure, we could survive if only our physical needs are met, but you'd just be sitting back and existing. Emotional and spiritual needs are quite different because they are unique to every individual and yet what every individual needs to really LIVE and get the most out of his or her life because it is what gives your life meaning and purpose, and if the need to actually be someone important isn't being met then you're just not going to be happy.

The need to be spiritually engaged is again,a 'need'. Emotional, spirititual or materialistic, man is a slave to his needs. Thanks for highlighting these points. The revelation very insightful.

our needs dont end because we dont want them to!lol....i dont remember who said this- man is born free but he is chained by the society....and hence the society creates rules which we all have to follow. about 90% of our needs is due to the fear of society. the rest 10% are essential needs along with our personal goals and aspirations which is fine. so i guess the only way to end our needs is to get out of this suffocating society and begin an entirely new civilization lol!!

haha.. wanna know why ? because human nature is greedy.. so .. you can't blame them if their need never end.. don't you think so? erm.. seriously.. let me give you an example.. let's say you're a politician.. if you're holding high post in the party.. i think you will higher demand on others.. and you'll be expecting more from others.. which is actually enough if you consider it properly.. sometimes.. parents too.. asking too much from their children without thinking whether it's enough already or not... i still believe human nature is greed.. no matter what happens.. my stand is still the same =)

We are greedy,my friend. You are right.Lol.As rightly mentioned by you, needs are not always materialistic. The need to see your loved ones excelling, the need for more authority and respect,so on and so forth....Very good points. Thanks charlestchan

It depends on individual satisfaction level. Some people dont get satisfied even they get everyhting. They start expecting another thing and another thing and another thing. So i feel like people compare with themselves with the people who are having abetter life style and when they reach upto that level then they start seeing again other people and it goes on and on.....So stop seeing others and be happy in whatever you have.

When I was younger I wanted everything and I cleaned my house from top to bottom every day , I admit I was obsessed with everything being perfect , over the years I did get a bit better at not " going mad " at housework but still wanted things to be really nice . last year my son was really ill and I almost lost my hubby twice when he had a triple bypass operation , and now my parents both have Alzheimer's , I still have a clean house but if it gets untidy It doesn't upset me , I would rather be out now for a drive with my family , when things like that happens you realize that material things don't matter what matters is being together with your family and having fun , life is too short xx have fun NOW xx

I watched a very entertaining tv show the other night called 'The Human Footprint'. It basically showed moderna art installations depicting what the average British person cosumes over their entire life. There were some amazing spectacles, like thousands of pints of milk, huge mounds of toilet paper (and dung!), heaps of cosmetic products etc. and many other things, like 47 gallons or so of tears we all produce. The most interesting statement that caught my attention was one regarding consumerism. Those who do not have this 'stuff' feel deprived and aspire to gain it, but those who do have 'stuff' do not feel the satisfaction we hoped that owning it would bring, so we continue to want more 'stuff'. I am a complete consumer, but recognise that owning these things should not define me. What makes a person is what they do and HOW they are, not what they own.
