You should not take complete rest. even in the hospital Physical therapy and Cardiac rehab already starts out your activity. They will most likely start you up walking the first day you come down from ICU. When you get home, you should continue walking or exercising as tolerated and build it up depending on how you are tolerating it. Usually they will advise you to avoid lifting, pushing or pulling more than 10lbs for at least several months.
Foods that are high in fat and salt should be avoided, no added salt, no salt shakers on the table.
If you have had a bypass surgery, you should have come home with a detailed discharge instructions on all of these.

hello,
my step-dad also had a bypass surgery last year and so did his father.
i think the thing with all medical procedures or injuries is to always rest first - then exercise comes later. You should ask the doctors who did the surgery what they would recommend and how long you should rest for until you can begin exercising again because i think many people are different due to their weight, age, height, etc.

After any form of major surgery you will probably mainly want to rest for a while and that is also advised, here you are actually kept in the hospital for a couple of weeks. When you can start working again or exercising kind of depends on the patient.
As for diet a protein rich diet is in general to be recommended after any form of surgery because it helps with the healing process.
