Will you help me solve the mystery of my falling star rating?

Good morning all,
I realize that having an attachment to our 'star rating' may not be terribly wise, from an emotional stand. However, I have paid attention to 'star rating' fluctuations as a gauge of percieved performance on MyLot. I make a conscious effort to not intentionally offend my fellow MyLotters. So, my question to you is: Have I offended you lately? If so, I would appreciate knowing how I may have inadvertently fuffled some feathers.
Yesterday, my star rating was a 97. Then, this morning it had dropped down to a 91. That's a significant drop!I participated in only one new discussion yesterday. And, it was not of a controversial nature. Although I did participate in a controversial topic the day before, the whole thread was deleted shortly after I chimed in. So, I doubt that I would have gotten many negative ratings from that discussion. And, if I did, wouldn't that have been reflected in my ratings change yesterday?
I did send the MyLot staff an email protesting the removal of Tuesday's controversial thread, but I was under the impression that star ratings were the result of member evaluation. Have I missed something here? Is our star rating affected by submitting inquiries to MyLot questioning their certain decisions? I tend to doubt it, but I'm still wondering how my rating was so negatively impacted, with such little activity.
So, I would really appreciate genuine feedback on this question. If you've noted me being insensitive, or rude, I'd really like to know.
You have my word that I will not rate any feedback to this discussion with a negative rating. I'm asking for honest input, and I will respect whatever you wish to convey.
Thanking you in advance,
-Ladyluna

Oh my goodness. What a horrible thing to befall you! It seems that weird things have been happening recently. I have replied to discussions of exactly the same nature as yours more than a few times recently.
You are right in that your reputation is determined only by the pluses and minuses you received from members. At least, this is what was confirmed by a myLot reply received from a member here (if he/she can be believed).
Your responses have always been quality ones so I have no idea why. And to drop from 97 to 91 overnight seems rather drastic. My only guess is that you offended someone unknowingly and that someone went to mark you down intentionally. It is much easier to go "down" than up. I can give you 100 pluses and your reputation will not even move. But if I give you 10 minuses, it might just fall like a boulder down a slope.
I am sorry to know that your reputation has dropped and that you are feeling upset. :/

Good morning Lordwarwizard,
Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.
Hmmm, so you've encountered other's with similar concerns? That is rather perplexing.
Also thank you for commenting on the importance of our rating as not just some insignificant opinion-meter, but rather as a gauge of our reputation. There's little in life as valuable as one's personal reputation.
Thanks again! Oh, and are you sure you can't just wave your magic wand, and return my star rating to it's previously unstained standing? Awww, come
on -- I'm sure you have that wand stashed somewhere in your robes.

The official term for that number is your star is "reputation".
I don't know what I can do really. But what I forgot to mention in my previous message is that I have already gone to your discussions and mark them all positive. You have only that few discussions and I am not sure if it helps. I only found that you need more than 1 person to help. Just me alone is not going to do much but we shall see. See if your reputation goes up by at least a point or 2 tomorrow.

You will be glad to know that I have gone the extra mile by checking the responses you have made. All in all, I guess I must have given you about 50 pluses.
I hope my effort was well spent. Tomorrow, we will see.

Good Morning Ladyluna,
I'm very perplexed that your star fell so drastically overnight. The reason being is that I saw several of your responses in other threads the past 2 days and plussed all of them. Even your discussion on the bees and all comments. I would have thought that you would have gone up in rating and not down.
I can tell you from reading other discussions on this subject and responses from administration that it's entirely the mylot members who are in total control of our stars.
Although my star only fell by 1 point a couple of months ago, I was still very hurt by it. It seems that it doesn't take as many negative marks to drop as it does for positives to rise. Why? I can't say. When I have tried to help someone get their star back up it takes much more work.
Here is my take on how the stars work and this is only my opinion so please don't take it as fact. If a discussion is started and then responses start coming in and another member who doesn't agree with the discussion and the responses and starts marking negative to all. Well that's only 1 negative for each. However if 6 members come in and rate negative to all their are now 6 negatives. When a discussion isn't controversial the discussion gets a plus, but many responses don't. Why? A lot of people just don't seem to take the time to rate other responses. Especially those that answer through their email. They hit the button that's marked reply to discussion and never even see the other responses. So in most cases the responses only get plussed by the thread starter.
If the discussion was reported and removed, it could have been reported by multiple members working together and all of them marking negatives prior to the discussion getting deleted. Of course this is just a thought. I still don't know why someone would mark you a negative, as I have never seen you be rude to anyone. Even when giving your opinion on a controversial topic you do so with knowledge and grace.
It seems to work better that instead of someone plussing all discussions started by a certain member, to go to their responses and plus those. Which is exactly what I will do, as lordwarwizard did. We will get you back a 10 as you deserve.
Hope that you don't let it get to you to much. I do understand and I'm pretty protective of my 10 reputation. I do get into a few discussions where I jeopardize my rating, but am usually fairly picky on those. Usually someone has started a discussion on a topic that I have strong feelings about and I just feel like voicing my opinion.
Maybe mylot could add a feature that sends us an alert about being marked a negative. Doesn't have to who did it for me, just what discussion so that I would know if it was one that I started or one that I responded to. Or my other feature that I would like to see added is the one when members mark the negative they must give a report like they do when reporting abuse. This would stop those negatives from the people who mark you with minuses just because they don't agree with you, if they had to give explanation.
Again I'm sorry to hear that you star fell, rest assured we will get it back up in no time. :)

Hello Beanie,
Thanks so much for sharing your perspective on my little dilemma.
Yeah, it's the overnight thing that's got me so baffled. The only time I've ever seen anyone's rating drop like a rock was after a particularly heated, controversial discussion, where many vehemently opposed one. And, I've only seen that scenario once. So, wooosh, was I surprised this morning.
As for your thoughts on multiple reporters of the controversial discussion marking me negatively before the discussion was deleted ... that was my first thought. But, then it occurred to me that any huge shift as a result of that 'hot' topic should have been reflected in my ratings change yesterday, right? The ratings rank given today reflects all of yesterday's activity? So, then my rating shouldn't have moved much, if at all today. Specifically, because I only engaged one new discussion yesterday, and any follow up discussions were on small discussions, with very few participants, and not of a controversial nature.
I really like your idea of a warning from MyLot that a particular discussion that we've engaged is generating alot of negative feedback. Perhaps that would allow us to add clarification, or offer different verbiage. Yup, I think you're on to something here!
Anyway, thank you!! I really appreciate your pearls of wisom.

Good morning Maddog108,
Thank you for sharing your observations.
I see that you are back up to a 'blue star' congratulations by the way. So, perhaps you and the others who have suggested that inactivity is the key are on to something. I do make a point to post at least one or two responses every day. Although, some days that's all I can fit in.
I will take your suggestion to heart, and make a more concerted effort to remain active.
Thanks again!

Hi, Well at first when I joined mylot I used to take a lot of interest in my star rating and I did reach a 10 star rating but since I have fallen to a 9 rating which is not that bad it is extremely difficult to obtain a 10 star rating again, so now I do my best and do not worry about the star rating as it can be very emotional stress if we worry about it. Although I do think that yo should be doing more responses so that you can build up your star rating.

Good morning Kathy77,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my dilemma.
I commend your commitment to "do your best" and not worry about the star rating. That is very sage advice!
I also consider your suggestion of submitting more responses as quite valid. I'd love to be able to do so. I am in awe of those who have the time, and the command of brevity to quickly pen their thoughts, and move on. I recognize brevity as a one of my weaknesses, and assure you that I continue to work on it.
Thank you for the feedback. Good suggestions - all!

Oh my ladyluna, I normally encountered friends complaining about their star rating too. But not like yours. I mean you have a huge dropped of 97 to 91. I was kind of "inactive" for the past few days and when I logged in a while ago, I discovered a lot of users who are flabbergasted with what's going on around mylot. Just the other day, I helped a friend to bring back her precious blue star. I went through all her threads and gave her many pluses. When I checked on her rating again, instead of gaining a few points, it has dropped one point again.
I always seek your responses in some of my threads. You never failed to provide me with a well-thought and meaningful posts. Unfortunately, we can't please everyone here. I have learned long ago to detach my emotions from mylot. I'm over with that stage already. Cheer up luna! I will go through all your threads and gave you hundred of pluses right now.

Thank you for your support Charms! I'm heart-warmed that you so appreciate the responses to your posts. That really means a lot!
It's also really helpful to know that others have indicated that something seems 'amiss' with recent goings-on.
Maybe it just the 'full-moon' effect or something. Hopefully, it'll pass quickly and we can return to our normal state of congenial, humorous, respectful and thoughtful communication.
Thanks again & have a super night.

hi ladyluna
i am new in this site ....but after reading ur discussion i feel that there can be two reasons for ur falling star rate.... the first one being that ur giving it too much importance....and so i have personally felt that if you give too much importance to something....u overdo it...or get too stressed and hence...the quality of your work goes down.
secondly, if u feel that this is not the case, then maybe people are jealous of your star rating....and hence they want to pull you down!...u cant do anything to stop them....so just relax. ultimately they r sure to get tired....and by the way i have given a positive rating to your discussion lol!!:D

Although i agree the minus ratings fairy can and does pay us all a visit once in a while, it may well be that your inactivity on the site contrebutes to it too. If you miss a couple of days your average plus rating may well fall. Consequently you can lose points simply because you are not here
hope this helps

Well, i wonder the same just a hour ago. I still had my blue star at the morning and now it`s down:-(
I am as active as usually.
I am as quite and polite as usually.
And for me it`s a mistery too. Is there a mistake in the programme calculations? Or may be somebody is eager to rate negative to me non-stop?
Well.Never mind.I will try not to be upset too much.

The only thing I can figure is that maybe the rating dropped from inactivity. I have been rating people positively and their rating don't seem to go higher. So, even with a few negative ratings I don't see how you could fall 6 points. Mylot should give us some guide as to how ratings are compiled and what affects them. There are a lot of things on this site that don't make sense. Losing posts and losing money for starters.

Good morning Sigma,
Thanks for offering the inactivity theory. Like you, I find myself seeking out a technical or procedural glitch. It's much more palateable than the alternative.
And, I'm with you on desiring a greater understanding of how ratings are compiled and what affects them. Excellent suggestions!

Hello ladyluna,
i am curious about how do you know about your star ratings? The only ratings I saw is the star icon appears on the upper left hand side of your username however I don't see the ratings as you have said 97 dropped to 91. I hope you will enlighten me on how to know the ratings.

Hello Titaniumsoul,
Thank you so much for dropping by this discussion. It's very nice to visit with you.
Of course, I'm happy to answer your question. If you hang your cursor over your numberical star rating
(yours is currently an 8) it will show you your actual percentage. If I haven't explained this well, just let me know, OK?
By the way, I wrote a long, detailed answer to your pharmaceuticals question, and then lost it. I'll re-post, but I'll sure be glad when I reach 500 posts and can cut/paste from my word editing program. Uggg, that's so frustrating. Anyway, forgive my rant. I just wanted to let you know that you'll have an answer to that question soon.

Hello Titaniumsoul,
Thanks for the add-on. This is a "Wizard of Oz" reference, so if you haven't seen it (which I'm sure you have) then, oops on me! But, like you I sometimes wonder whether there's someone working the dials behind the curtain as well. So much for our ponderings when we signed on with no detail. So, it is!

Hello ladyluna,
I didn't realise the ratings until you post your discussion. The only thing I have noticed is I have been getting a red star all day long. Well, after saw other people discussions, I realise there is another story behind this incident.
Other people discussions are great. However, I truly think it is due to competition among mylot members. I hope you can visualize the following scenario:
Once, I post a broad question which I forgotten the title but I remember there are same discussions as mine so it is like someone at the back is grading our discussion and give our ratings. If we do not produce quality discussions, our ratings will drop. Don't forget the numbers of visitors are increasing so we are facing challenges everyday.
Don't worry about the quality of discussions, we should focus on the knowledge that we gain from discussions.
I should say this site is a decent site that I have ever seen. Because you can interact with people around the world, gain knowledge and earn money however, the money earned is too low and slow.
On the whole, This site is very informative. Remember, I have posted some complaints about mylot? I was terribly upset about their stubborness and slow progress.

Like you, I was also "attached" the star rating cos I prefer blue to red. When my star changed from red to blue and back to red, I was challenged. I finally managed to get it back to blue. But when it changed color again, I recall what I had done, the discussions I had responded.
From then on, I avoided certain discussion topics and consistently respond to all my friends' discussions directly to the point, sharing my opinions in a few lines or more.
Of course, I plus all discussions and responses I read, regardless whether I respond to the discussion. I do not know what is happening, but I just try my best. I try to maintain if not improve the reputation :P

Hello Whyaskq,
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I'm thrilled that you were able to trace the culpable discussion, and avoid similar discussions in the future. As I explained, I doubt that the controversial discussion I engaged could have produced such a negative effect, since the whole post was deleted right after I responded. And, my response to that discussion was not inflammatory. So, I guess I just hit a nerve somewhere.
I think that Beaniefanatic submitted a really great suggestion earlier. It would be very helpful if MyLot could notify us of rabid reactions to particular posts. It would afford us the opportunity to diffuse the situation before it becomes retaliatory and damaging.
Oh, and you should be congratulated for making a sincere effort to help other's reputations. And, for regaining your blue-star!
Thank you!

Just keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about reputation or star rateing. A lot of mylot's stuff is kept in the dark as to it's real workings so I wouldn't be too alarmed. I'm honestly shocked my rateing is as high as it with how often I speak out on controversial topics, and with the unpopular views that I often take. I don't see any reason why your rateing should have dropped because you always make great posts and very nice and diplomatic to everyone invloved. Who knows though, what will set a person off? Just ignore and keep putting out the quality post and discussions as you always do and I'm sure it will rebound in no time.

Hello Filmbuff,
You do tread in controversial waters. Yet you present reasoned, respectully penned questions and suppositions. That's what I like about your discussions. And, that is the embodiment of learning: tackling the tough issues while respecting the varying views. So, I am not surprised that you have a blue star.
Thanks for the encouragement. I will take your kind words to heart.

I think it's easy to lose sight of things if you are concentrated too heavily in "stars" "best responses" or etc. The point of myLot is to express your views and not to make everyone happy. Sure you don't want to abuse your privilages, however we are all different and there are always people that you will offend no matter what you say. Be who you are, then your friends will come. Try to please everyone, you'll end up pleasing no one.

Good morning Swapw07,
You're absolutely right in pointing out that we cannot please everyone all of the time. However, I do believe that with a commitment to understanding the various sides of an issue, that we can honestly present our views without being offensive. All are free to agree or disagree as they see fit, yet my commitment is to do so respectfully. Even when discussing controversial issues.
And, so if I've offended, then I've broken my own cardinal rule ... and remain open to learning the how's and when's. That is why I openned this dialogue.
So I thank you for posting your thoughts here. They are appreciated. You can believe me when I say that I will ponder them.

Yes Ephylyos, it is a nice community! Every community has its little up's and down's. But, our commitment to making it 'nice', wins out in the end.
Welcome to MyLot! Please enjoy your time here. There's much to learn, and much to contribute. Don't be afraid to participate in many discussions that you have experience with. For the most part, the people here are very genuine and welcoming!
