Why vegetarians become vegetarians?

I am planning to be a vegetarian. My reason? I easily visualize my meal's source. How they are made, how they are handpicked...
And when i eat meat, I imagine a knife protruding on a skin of some animal I cannot name.
Why do people change their meal preferences--from meat to strict vegetarian?
