Making Choices with Discussions - Be Honest

I've been a member here on Mylot for a little over a month now. I have noticed that certain members garner the most responses to every conversation they start, regardless of topic matter. I'm not passing judgment, but I do wonder why their conversations soar, while others barely get noticed. I have to ask, what draws you to a conversation and be honest:
1) The topic matter - you are drawn to the discussion because it interests you or it's an easy topic to discuss for you or it resonates with you on some level.
2) The avatar - Does the avatar play a role with you? Do you prefer answering someone who posts a personal photo and does how that person looks color your judgment either way.
3) Nationality - Are you more drawn to respond to discussions from other members of your own culture or is that not a factor at all?
4) Popularity - Does the popularity of a member impact you based on their star rating, the number of hot topics they post and the number of posts they themselves have posted?

I usually try to answer most of my friends discussions, especially the ones that answer the most of mine. I do admit that I can easily glance at the discussion and know there's a language barrier, so I sometimes don't reply because it's hard for me to get my point across and sometimes I feel like I've offended someone.

No No No!!! It's also very helpful to take the foriengers under your wing also here. I have a few that were terrible with the English language. Now that I've helped them here they are getting pretty fluent now. It helps to teach others as this site is in English only. I can't deprive one of this right by not responding. I send them Pms to aide in their language skills.

I do find that I tend to shy away from someone who is language challenged (for English that is). On the other hand I do understand that they would like to communicate with everyone else here so I try to answer any way I can. Thanks for sharing.

The mentioned members usually have started and still continue to start discussions with great quality and what not. It also helps to have a lot of friends on your list with the same interests also. I go to my friends discussions then to others in general. I try to find ones that interest me the most as far as what I know about the discussion from my own experiences. I also try to answer a few new memebrs discussions as they are the backbone of the future of this site also. Nothing else plays a part in the decision of which discussions for me to respond. the avatar is just an addition to a members personality online in my eyes. Popularity doesnt matter here to me nor in real life does it matter to me. As far as their nationality thats a tosds up as I love to learn about new cultures from other countries. So I have searched out friends from certain countries just to learn about their customs and ways of life and their ways they work here on mylot. Thanks for this discussion and have a great day.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes it soes wonders for newbies to be helped in this way. I add a few weekly then decide after tutoring them some if I keep them or delete them. Most stay on for wuite sometime. Others gone right away. Haha.

Hi wachit I can in all honesty that I chose the discussions I respond to by subject matter and the mood I am in. I try to respond to my friends first. Once I get them caught up I go trolling as I believe it is called. Some times it is the easier ones if I’m tired and my brain is on vacation. If I’m up on top I will respond on the more difficult ones. If I’m down to the wire it’s the easy ones for sure. But that is usually at the end of the month. I like a variety of discussions. When I get through responding here I may check out your other discussions then your friends. Oh, by the way I had to laugh at the town you are from. Interesting. I like to collect the names of towns. I may check out the history of yours. Have a nice evening.

i feel the topics matter more than anything else..as i need to have something to share on it or to make a statement regarding it..then comes popularity...others hardly matter...

Well I have been on mylot for little over a week now and I personally get in coversations on topics that interest me and discussion I find interesting. I don't go into a discussion on anything or things I know nothing about. I never really play attention to the avatars although I have seen some interesting ones. There nationality or popularity plays no role at all I am an equal opportunity conversationalist. And this is a very good question. Thank you always looking for deeper conversation.

As someone new to myLot, I'm pretty much responding to topics that interest me, or that I think I could add something to the conversation even if it's just my two cents.
The avatar doesn't really effect me, except that I don't like the little green guy/girls for my own personal avatar, and haven't taken the time to figure out how to change that. I just look like so many other little green guys/girls all running around here! lol
Also with my old tired eyes, I can't always tell if it's an actual picture of them, or something they got from somewhere else. I know that sounds kind of stupid, but I can't always tell the difference.
Nationality doesn't really effect me unless they're asking questions that can only be answered with short responses, or trying to entice me to look at this link for making a million bucks in a minute. I skip those especially if there's no or few other responses.
I take popularity into account only if it's a specific myLot question, figuring they've been here a long time and might know how to answer something I'm trying to figure out. Otherwise I don't put a lot of weight into popularitiy.
Since you wanted honesty, I almost took age into account my first day or two here, being hesitant to accept someone as a friend who was 40 or more years younger than me, initially thinking what would we have in common with that big an age gap? Then I looked at her profile, found she wrote and started beautiful and intelligent discussions, and was glad to accept her as a friend.
So now I've learned from that and try not to make a hasty judgement based on differences in our ages.

Thanks for your in-depth explanation. Everyone seems to have their own methodology as to how they choose a discussion. For me, I go right for the subject matter. If it resonates with me, then I often times will answer those discussions first. I also like to read what everyone else has written, but not before I write my own response first as I don't want to be persuaded by anyone else's opinions.

Actually I just realized it's the lime green background I don't like a whole lot, and the guy/girl isn't green, but I still don't like this avatar very much. Told you I had old tired eyes.

The topic is what draws me to a discussion. I've not paid any attention to Nationality or popularity, but sometimes an avatar will catch my attention. But I don't answer a discussion based on the avatar. If it isn't of any interest to me, or a subject that I don't have a comment for, I just pass it up.

I am mostly driven by the title of the discussion first. I tend not to answer discussions started by members with less than 10 posts. The avatar does not really matter much, though I tend to answer discussions of members who have an avatar, it might sound stupid.
Some topics seem to be popular than others, especially the ones dealing with family and children.

I usually respond to things that resonate with me on a level, or things that interest me.
Ratings, responses, avatars, nationality and all the rest of it don't mean a thing to me. I'm open to discussions from people all over the world, and I'm not choosy.
I'll respond to anything if I think I can add something to the discussion. If not, I leave it be.

The topic matter is what draws me. If I see one that I can contribute or would like to have more answers to. I feel that is what we should be using this for is to contribute our experience to one another to help one another. After all, isn't that what we really all should be doing in all our lives?

1. topic matter is unimportant it can be anyhing and everything- " I have an opinion but not all the info to back it up !!" lol
2. the Avatar only ever makes me check out someones profile "is this person really that photo?"
3.Nationality is unimportant - "It's the Web" (although there are obviously cultural differences)
4. Popularity doesn't matter(although I've got favourites) "todays hot young bloggers/posters will be tommorows archive!"

This is why I pick topics for the most part: 1) The topic matter - you are drawn to the discussion because it interests you or it's an easy topic to discuss for you or it resonates with you on some level.
I also have a minimum number of posts I like to do each day, and I choose another type of discussion if I need to close the gap quickly and have other things to do. I go to the Hot Topics and answer a few of them because they are usually short, sweet and easy to answer.

I am honest when i tell you that for me is not important what nationality is a user, and all time when i have to choose a discussion i will go always at my friend list or more fast at person who replied to me.
Of course i like to see a piture in avatar or at least a symbol, and i don't like to see blank avatars but if is my friend i don't have a problem with this...
No,popularity is not important for me...in fact what does matter is interaction with my posts and i will choose always to reply to someone which come often to my posts instead someone popular but very "stingy" with comments....

let me tell you that i have quite similar type of observation. there are few users who really get lots of discussions for simple posts. I have noticed taht its mainly due to their avatar and popularity in myulot. For me i response a discussion when the subject just interests me. I am not fascinated about any users here.

Hi wachit14
1)The topic matter is what resonates the most for me, although I do tend to check the discussions of my friends first, to respond to. I hardly ever enter a "very" popular discussion - ie one that has 30 or more responses before I even get to it, because I think my answer would somehow get lost in there, and by that time anyway, I don't feel i could add much value.
2) I am a very visual person, and do like to see what others look like just so I can picture myself communicating to them, but it doesn't mean i am more likley to respond to a person who has a photo as an avatar to another who doesn't.
3)Nationality doesn't play a big part for me - I enjoy conversing with people from all over the world. In fact I have a slight preference to mix with people from overseas rather than my own country.
4)The popularity of a member doesn't really draw me either - but of course, certain people and their ideas, the way they express themselves do draw me in and I most likely seek out their other conversations.

I usually look at my friends discussions first when I log in, and respond to them first too. After that I will browse the discussions and if I feel drawn to them, then I will respond. I don't really make any judgements on who to respond to and who to ignore, it is usually the topic that attracts me

Hi, wachit14, I have the same query about why some discussions soar and why other didn't get much responses. I thought maybe because of their star rating (10). But yesterdary, surprising one of my discussions made to more than 50 responses and this really make me happy. My topic is simple and why I post that discussions is I wanted to know how many people are actually doing it. And what I notice was that the more you response to discussions, the more your discussions get response. I dont know, I might be wrong about this but try and response as many.

Usually two things get my attention attracted.
First: The topic matter. If it interests me, then I jump in. Maybe it isnt on my "interests" page here on myLot, but if I like it, I'm in.
Then: If it's a topic created by a friend. Sometimes even the discussions that say about something I like can get a little boring or too much, so I usually start with my friends' discussions. Then I move to the ones on the "discussions with no responses" list.
cheers! ^^

First of all I try to respond to discussions that my friends start. I also look at the topic. I try to respond to topics in which I have something to add or I have an interest in. I don't really notice a persons avatar or how many response they have gotten.
