Virginia Shooting: Is the right to bare arms all that necessary??

After the recent tragedy of the University shooting that left 33 students dead i guess it is about time that we start asking ourselves should the ordinary citizen be allowed to keep guns? I believe that in america atm the last thing anyone needs is a gun to protect himself, the state is in such a security uproar that there are probably more cops than people in certain areas so why should people be allowed to bare arms? i believe that a vast majority of crimes are facilitated by this very simple right which grants any idiot the oppotunity to weild a weapon. Please lets reason it out, much is at stake here and theres little to gain when weapons are involved
