Three guys walk into a motel. They want one room. The assistant manager charges them $30 for the room. They agree and fork over $10 each. The guys go to get settled into the room. 5 minutes later, the assistant manager found out from his manager that there was a $5 off special on the room. He had charged the 3 guys $5 too much. The manager gave him $5 out of the register to give to the 3 guys. The assistant manager thought for a second. "How can I split $5 between 3 guys." He put $2 in his back pocket and gave each guy a dollar (so now they have each paid $9 for the room.) 9 times 3 is 27. The Assistant Manager has $2 in his back back pocket. Where did the other dollar go?

This is a riddle that my dad used to ask, my brother and I figured it out and tried to explain it to him, but I don't know if he ever got it. I am going to come back later to see if anyone else has the answer, but to me it is obvious. If someone knows the answer from before let the people who are trying to figure it out have a chance to give an explanation.

It should be 27 + 3 instead of 27 + 2 because 3 dollars were returned to the guys. Don't forget the 2 dollars went back to the assistant manager (or the motel) so the guys actually paid 28 dollars, which is obviously more than 9 dollars each.

They didn't pay $9, they paid $8.3333333..... Correct me if I'm wrong. Let me explain... when the manager removed $5, it was remaining $25, it means as at then, thay had paid $25/3 which is $8.3333333... plus the extra $1 that was given to them, plus the $2 with the assistant manager.

The answer as I know it is that the $2 is part of the $27. The $3 is separate and should be added to the $27. By the way it is told you are adding the $25 for the room to the same $2 twice and it is the $3 you are missing. So as the third response states $2 + $3 = $5 or $25 + $2 = $27 ... + the $3 that the guys got back = $30 I don't know if this clears things for anyone but it was always simple math once you get past the explanation. btw ... this is the way that fast talk artists get that extra dollar or five from you by making you believe one thing and doing another.
