I'm curious, I've been on anti-depressants for a good part of my life, I'm now 47. I WOULD LIKE to eventually be able to stop taking them, as of right now, I KNOW I can't because a couple of month ago, my doctor was trying to switch me from the one I'm on to another one. He warned me NOT to stop taking the one I was on, that I need to slowly be tapered off it while taking the new one. Well stupidly, I didn't think it would really matter much so I just quit taking the one I was on and started the other one. Wow, was that a mistake!! Three weeks later, despite the new one I was on, I started getting very, very depressed, so I KNOW I won't be going off them any time soon.
I was just wondering if there's anyone here that was on them for quite a while and was able to eventually go off them with no problems.

When I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia just over 10 years ago, I was put on anti-depressants. I went through 8 different ones until I found one that gave me no side effects. Things became so good for me at one point that I asked the doctor if I could go off them. I tried on two occasions to wean myself off but even though I was still taking them, but at a lower dosage, I immediately began to feel tired and blue.
I was also put on the generic brand by my insurance company and went spiralling into a deep depression for over a month before I realized what the cause was. I got put back on the brand name and felt much better within a couple of days.
I have accepted the fact that I will be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life. Though I have a chronic illness, the illness is under control and does not make me depressed. I get down about life sometimes but nothing like the depression I get when I am not on medication. It is quite clear to me that it is a chemical imbalance. I will be 45 this year. My mother is on anti-depressants, I think since menopause, and she is 82 years old. Obviously she will be on them for the rest of her life.
It's not such a bad thing. It's better than feeling the way we do when we are NOT on the medication. If it works, then that's what you gotta do. Look at diabetics who have to be on insulin for the rest of their lives. We have an illness that needs to be treated with medication and, as the other poster said, be thankful that we are able to find the medication to treat it. We are not living with a fatal illness (at least I'm not - I don't know your personal situation) so for that we should be grateful.

Hi BGBabe I feel so bad for you. I dont take anti-depressants and Im very glad about that. If your feeling better while your on the medicine why would you want to stop it? Hey if something works for you stick with it. Being depressed is not good for you overall health. I would hang in there with continue taking your medicine. And just try and be happy. Life is too short to be sad.

I was on them when I was in my twenties. Through therapy I was able to manage my depression without the pills. The kind of therapy is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. I managed occasional depressive times well.
I'm 2 years older than you. And I now have some severe health issues that cause chronic pain. The chronic pain is making me depressed so I'm considering going back on an anti-depressant. I don't know which one, but I know the pain conditions aren't going to let up so I do need help with the depression that's going with it. This depression needs medication, I'm sure.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, STRESS IS ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN DEPRESSION. If you've EVER suffered from major depression, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT. I have NO stress in my life. When you suffer from major depression, you don't even feel like getting out of bed in the morning, MUCH LESS DOING YOGA.
Thanks for you response, but make sure YOU KNOW what you're talking about before you give one.

Well, sometimes its unavoidable that we feel depressed for the day..but for the health its not a good side, i believe in Meditation which will balance our mind and helps to be normal at situations
