Yes, you may be a drug-dependent though you don't smoke grass or buy shabu. The following are over the counter drugs which can be habit-forming:
Diet pills: These may appear harmless since manufacture claim they were designed only to reduce one's appetite. But experts have proven that diet pills develop drug dependent and have different side effects. Diet pill users may suffer from phenylpropanolamine(PPA), a temporary increase in blood pressure. People with high blood pressure who take diet pills become prone to PPA.
Stimulants and caffeine: Coffee and pills that keep you wide awake at night have strong caffeine. The more caffeine intake one gets, the harder it is for him to withdraw from the habit.
Sleeping pills: Most food and drug administrations all over the world stress that sleeping pills are for occasional use only because of their antihistamine content that induces you to sleep. Sleeping pills could develop drug dependency.
Nasal spray: Runny nose, congestion and sneezing may plague a person who constantly uses nasal spray. He would even find it hard to breath without the spray, should he becomes addicted to it. Nasal sprays should be used for not more than 3 days.
Laxatives: Excessive use of laxatives partially paralyzes the intestines and causes constipation. Experts say the most habit-forming laxatives are those with phenolphthalein which irritates nerves causing intestinal muscles to contract. Women who take laxatives frequently to maintain their shape and weight even with a high calorie diet can become drug dependent.
