It depends on the kind of parents and the kind of schools, if you ask me. Little children first and foremost need lessons in personal discipline, along with creative freedom and encouragement.
However, a lot of inexperienced parents often tend to either pamper or restrict their child, in which case an early age is better to start school.
On the other hand, if the parents handle the child very well, and if the education system is restrictive (in many countries the education system kills creativity) then a later date is better, since it will help the child develop in the right direction in its formative years

i guess formal education can start after 5 years but if playway school is considered then the child can be sent at the age of 3 or 4 onwards.

well i believe that the start of the formal eductation is around five years old and up. i think this is the best time for kids to start to take responsibilities. they know how to listen and to communicate already at this age....
they can communicate once they learn how to talk but 3 years old up to four but they spend more time on playing.

in my place children start their formal education at seven. that the first grade of an elementary school. I don't know if playgroup and kindergaten are include in formal education. if that's so means that children start their formal education at 3 or 4.

I started my formal education when i was 2.5 years old so i think 3-4 age is suitable for starting kindergarten as i take about 2 years in kindergarton so when child will reach up to age of 5 he/she will start his real education
