I gave up smoking about 10 years ago now, the reason being the effect I felt it was having on my breathing plus the price was becoming an issue. I am afraid I am now very much anti smoking. I have lost members of my family due to lung cancer, yet still other member of my family persist. It wasn't easy giving up but after telling everyone that I was going too I was not prepared to lose face and be seen as a quitter. My health has improved greatly and I really wish my sons would follow suit, but the only person you can really give up for is yourself. Only when you truely want to will you succeed. It will be very intersting to see just what happens when the " No Smoking In Public Places" ban comes into effect in July. I have heard the local pubs are offering free hypnosis sessions to those who want to quit before they are forced to stand outside to smoke. Good luck to anyone who is actually trying to give up right now, believe me it really is worth it !!

I agree ... It's hard but, because it's not easy, is that a reason not to try. That's a sign of a person who is a quitter, they may not quit smoking, but that's an attitude of a person who appears to quit in everything else the minute things get hard. I'm so happy for you that you Quit, & you did so, because you believed you could. You didn't sit around thinking of reasons why you can't ! ... For what it's worth, I'm proud of ya:-)

i had tried smoking once in college because some friends influenced me into doing it. it gave me a huge headache. from then on, no one can convince me ever again to have a try at it. when i have learned about all the ill effects that smoking brings about to users, i had ruled it out that my kids can never have a hand on this thing, too.

I do not smoke but I have family members who does.I have one aunt who smokes two packs a day and we have tried convincing her to stop, but nothing seems to work.I've tried convincing my father and he really doesn't need to be smoking being he had a stroke,a diabetic, high blood pressure,he has seizures and all. Then smoking on top of those health problem is not good at all.The doctor told him that needs to stop but he wont listen.

That's always been something I didn't understand, the doctor can tell someone if you don't stop smoking ASAP you are going to die, & people can't seem to bring themselves to value their life enough to do so. I don't have an addictive personality ...Thank God! Thanks for a great answer! ... I happy ya don't smoke:-)

I am very aware what smoking does to my lungs and what could happen to me if I continue to smoke. But as I am sure you know, smoking is an addiction and not everyone can battle an addiction on their own. I have tried every over the counter process (patches, gum, lozenges) and I have had no luck. The longest I have made it is one month. I have come to the conclusion that it is something that I can not do on my own and that now I need to talk to my doctor about her suggestions (medication, therapy whatever). I have been a smoker now for about half my life (16 years). I am really not even sure why I ever started.
You would be surprised how many people out there (there are three women in my office at work alone) that don't believe that they are hurting themselves and never intend on quitting. Atleast I realize that I am doing damage to my body, and that if I stop it now, I can "reverse" some of the damage.

So believe that you can do it & you will. It's not an easy fight, I'm not trying to act like it is, however your chances become a lot better when you believe you can do it. You are already half way there by knowing you have a problem. Thanks 4/answer! .....Best of luck:-)
