any antivirus software will slow your machine, it depends of the antivirus, but if you install a lot of antivirus to make sure you will protected, what you will do at the end is be more vulnerable and end with a slow machine, i have used norton and avgfree and avg internet security, from what i've heard from a friend right know the best antivirus is mcfee, but i will also use avg internet security, i don't recommend norton, is too heavy and will slow a lot your computer, or as i did, i changed to a mac system, for my personal use, and right know i don't have to worry about virus and that things (altought from time to time i scan my machine, cause i use both windows and mac, and still an infected file cannot damage my mac but it can do with windows)

Using more of one anti-virus software at a time is never a good idea, because this may cause conflicts between programs and cause system instability.

I only read bad reviews about Norton, it is a bulky software, it comes bundled with a firewall as well that's why it slows down the system in a noticeable way. My favorite anti-virus software is AVG.

AVG will not catch as much as Norton.
However, AVG is free and if you do an occasional online scan with the free TrendMicro Pccillin Housecall you are well protected.

norton is the most over rated antivirus. use NOD32 instead, it uses less system memory which doesn't affect the speed of your computer. fast in scanning and detection rate is very high. it also work silently in the background.

Yea , they usually do because most good anti viruses are programmed to run in the back ground. And as far as they have been released the fastest one yet is the Norton anti virus 2007.It uses the lowest system requirements.

I see your point. The reason why your machine slow down with this antivirus is because it uses a lot of memory. If you have too many applications installed in your computer plus the antivirus, then it will totally slow down your computer tremendously, regardless if you have enough SD-RAM which may help run all your applications smoothly. Currently, I am using a free-version antivirus, which is Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition. This can be downloaded at their official website at www.free-av.com I have been using this one for almost two years. Since using this one, I have never had problems at all with regards to the overall function and system performance of my machine. Otherwise, I am very impressed and satisfied with its performance. Its feature is to update regularly and can be scheduled at your most convenient time. On the other hand, it is very light on resources. It does not use a lot of memory, which in return does not slow down your computer. It scanned pretty well and detects and deletes rootkits, worms, viruses, malwares, etc. Overall, I loved the overall performance of this software.
Hope this would help to you in any way.
Have a great day and GOD speed!

Antivirus software will slow a computer down somewhat. I have had better luck with Norton Internet Security than with any other software. Mcaffee slowed my computer down something awful. You should not run more than one antivirus software on a computer at a time, though.

I use many different type of antivirus softwares before. Norton is the slowest for me. This year I use CA instead, so far is ok with me. I still don't trust all antivirus software will do all job. Therefore, I also make sure I clean up my cookies and history on my browser once a week, pluse I'll run spybot. You can download Spybot, it's free.

i have compared Mcafee Internet Security 2007 vs. Norton Internet Security 2007 and found out that Norton makes your pc slower. This is very evident since i both tried them in my old Pentium 3 computer with 256mb memory. My choice is Mcafee and i installed it in my P4 machine and works terrific!
