Every week in the US at least 2 children die because drivers have blind spots while driving. That doesn't count the children injured and pet killed and injured. In the next town to me a man backed over his 3 year old when the child rolled his horsey down a slight hill under his father's truck. The child died before reaching the er.His dad has never been the same. Do you know anyone that this has happened to ?Where and what are they doing today? Please remember this discussion when you next get behind the wheel.Know this can happen to anyone . Please be careful while backing your car up.

I don't know anyone personally that has lived through something so tragic as to have backed up over a child or hit one with a car. You hear about these kinds of stories an your heart breaks. When I back up or pull my car out I double check to make sure that there isn't a child near my vehicle. It only takes a second to double check to make sure that there isn't someone that could be hurt if you were to move on.

Oh my... I'm sure that was a freak accident rather than a "blind spot". There would be no way you could see a child coming down the hill behind you riding their toy. They are too low to the ground and if at close proximity to the truck, then they wouldn't be visible in the rear-view mirror. That's a most tragic accident... the father will live with the guilt of killing his son for ever more, and the mother, I would presume for letting him into the area of the yard where the hubby was driving the truck. Soooooo sad and soul destroying for the parents.
So what can be done? How is it possible to get a full view of the lower exterior of your car? I don't know but I hope somebody can find a way. Maybe a bleeper fitted to the exterior of the vehicle... a radar type of alarm, which warns of anything close which can't be seen in the mirror?
Thank you for an interesting discussion, Raydene. I was so sorry to hear about your problems yesterday, but keep your chin up and hold your head high. You're one of the best people I know so walk tall, my friend. These trials are sent to improve us, and we all get them from time to time. I'm with you all the way!
Brightest Blessings and have a great day! xoxox

That is a sad story about the three year old. The father will probably never be able to forgive himself. I remember when I was younger being told of a story of a man who ran over his daughter and killed her. I dont like backing up my car especially in a busy parking lot such as walmart because no one watches where they are going.

Oh I feel sorry for the child and for the father as well. Thanks for bringing this reminder out raydene. The incident once again reminds us to be very extra careful with our moves wether be it in driving or whatever that we are doing.
Godbless to all!

I am always sadden when I hear these kinds of stories. I have taught my children to never walk behind a motor vehicle because of hearing these stories. I have also taught my children never to approach a moving vehicle. I have been teachinf the children these lessons since the small. It is never to early to start showing your child the proper way to be around vehicles.

Raydene, this is so true and so sad. I don't know anyone personally. But I have seen an awful lot of run over animals, and it tears me apart. I rated you a + again for a fantastic posting. I hope someone reads this, and is a little more careful when driving. That they remember it is a machine, and kills.

Oh no Sweetie that must have been awful for him and he will never forgive himself for that ever He has to live with that for the rest of his Life the poor Man
I hate backing my Car up even just coming out of a Parking Space as People just don't care they walk behind your Car or they don't hold onto the Children so I always ease out very slowly and my foot ready to go on the Break
Love and Hugs to you xxxx

Hi Hon, Oh that is dreadful tht so many children die from blind spots, the man that backed over his 3 year old child this also happened a few months ago here in Australia as well. Well in regards to the poor child that is dreadful lucky for the one in here I know this particular man and lucky for him that his child is ok and survived but he will never forgive himself. It surely can happen to anyone.

This is a timely reminder to all of us to be extra careful. I know I am always very wary when I back out from my driveway, as there are often children about in the road but it still needs to be said every now and again, to watch out for children. I have seen a couple of very near misses on the road since learning to drive, one involving a very small child on a bicycle who didn't look but rode straight into the road and was right behind a bus !!!

We had a close call last summer so now I'm even more careful about this. I drive a GMC Safari, for any one not familiar with them, they are very tall vans. Basically nothing under four feet tall is visible around them. I was leaving and my s/o was holding our then 1 1/2 year old and our then 3 1/2 year old was standing next to him. They were standing in the grass off to the passenger side so I thought it was safe enough. I put my van in reverse and turned away from them to back up. Just as I pressed on the gas I caught a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. I hit the brakes and looked in time to me my s/o dive and grab the back of the 3 1/2 year olds shirt. Apparently he wanted one last hug and kiss and had started to run around the back of the van since he knew enough not to run IN FRONT of a moving vehicle. He didn't know I was going to go in reverse. Thankfully I stopped and he got caught in time but it's still hard to think of what could have happened...all because he wanted one more hug and kiss from me.
So now the rule is that all kids MUST be standing on the porch before I even start it. I just had this conversation with my 11 year old the other day. She wanted to just hang around in the drive way as I was leaving but I told her no. Even though she's older and taller I told her the story of what almost happened to her little brother again and said she HAD to be on the porch.
I don't know of anyone that has actually run over their child but I know of a few that have had close calls too.

I have given up watching the news as it is always full of sad stories. I almost drove into a car on a roundabout as it was in the windscreen edge blindspot as I was approaching and I had not seen it. Our driveway is quite open so I am able to check before driving out and the children quite careful in our cul-de-sac. My children are teenagers and just learning to drive. I hope they are careful and do not get involved in such a sad incident to ruin their driving lives before they have properly started. Poor man.
