the goal of English?for use or for exam

I am a guy who usually aims high.I am a English leaner and I often flick through hundreds of newwords at a time.And then I do the same the other time.By doing this,I can remember many of new words.When I read the English article I can get what mean easily,but when I wite composition,I can't use them exactly.So I can't get high scores in the English exams.I am so bored of that.the first goal of study is to know what other says,and the next is to show yourself off.I think most of our English are at the first step.Be that as it may,most of us English have to take exams so to get into graduate school or something else.
