Too old to keep on buying clothes? Please read on...

The other day I overheard a conversation that an elderly couple was having at an department store. This is not a joke. The man wanted to buy new clothes for himself and his wife said to him: "What do you want to buy all that for at your age? You´re over seventy, what´s the point of buying new clothes?" I´m not judging the lady, but nevertheless I was amazed at what she said. Isn´t it like saying that he´s already got one foot in the grave? Please share your thoughts.

I think that as people get older, they tend to say things without thinking first. That is very sad that this woman would not want her husband to get himself new clothing. As an outsider, we don't know their circumstance, so it is very hard to make a judgement on this.

sorry, i didn't mean so say that you were judging. If I heard that it would surprise me also. Although I have run into many elderly people who tend to say things without thinking first.

Well Dana I agree with you that is what she is basically saying and I think that is cruel Why should he not buy new Clothes, I mean 70 is not that old anymore so what was her Problem Even if he was close to it why still refuse him something in his Life So I agree that was an awful thing to say Love and Hugs

I think she is cheap. Or at least, that was my first response. 70 is not old nowadays. My in laws lived into their 90's, and bought clothes all the time. I think it was great that the guy wanted to look and feel good buying some clothes. My hubby is 70, and I always get him new clothes, or anything else he wants. He is alive, and still here, so he should enjoy. This women must have been cheap, that is all I can think.

True, being 70 nowadays doesn´t mean old. He´s alive and kicking, so why should he not enjoy buying something for himself.

I don't believe that there is any reason not to buy new clothes. Having new clothing to wear is uplifting to your self-esteem. The wife is probably very frugal and wouldn't buy anything for herself and was angry with the husband for buying "new" when he had plenty of wearable clothing in his closet. Sometimes the words used are not the best.

It´s the way she said it, Elusive. It just sounded so mean. You´re right, sometimes what´s being said doesn´t come across the right way, but in this case...

I simply love to eavesdrop on what the elderly communicated or talk. They are always so interesting. Perhaps they are really thrifty and do not see the need to spend extra. Afterall, it is true. Does the elderly in the current generation go after fashion? I have yet to see any in fashionable clothes. They are just being conservative and clothing is just to cover and protect the body.

In this case, she didn´t want her husband to spend extra. He wanted to buy some new clothes, don´t know if fashionable or not, but she said that he was "too old" to still bother about buying something new for himself.

I find that quite upsetting! Doesn't matter hat age he is - he is still lere and that was an awful thing to say! My Grandma is 83 and we are always encouraging her to buy herself new things - in fact if it is something quite expensive we tend to buy them for birthday/christmas or 'just because' gifts for her so she can wear and enjoy them!

That´s what I think. There´s no age limit to buying something new. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, dear.

Wow!! This is amazing for sure. I know though for some reason that older people sometimes seem to be the last people wanting to buy themselves New clothes, and are Happy to be able to continue to wear clothes they have been wearing for the last 20 yrs. it seems. I have never understood that though really, and I feel that every person should be entitled to buying themselves a New outfit every now and then.

Yes, it´s as if they were preparing themselves for departure. Meaning, why bother buying new clothes, we can´t take them with us. I don´t understand it either.

Well, it is either that, or she is afraid he is going to go out and try to impress another lady in his fine new clothes. Yes, some people do decide they are old long before their time, they get ready to just lay down in a grave and pull the soil in after them like a blanket, no need for newness at all. It is sad.

Awwwww... that makes me sad on so many levels. These days, there's such a high number of seniors who exist on less than livable incomes and I think they panic at spending anything. Then, there are others who just never learned NOT to be frugal, based on their life experiences. Of course, without a doubt, there are also some who are just cheap, like any other age bracket LOL But I feel bad for that man. He clearly still cares about how he looks and he should be supported in that. There are lots of seniors today that are so vital and active -- some of them make me tired just hearing about them! It sounds like that wife made a really poor comment and should have thought better of her husband. They should really be enjoying life at that age and treating themselves to whatever nice things are within their means. So many of us desperately hold on to our money for the "what if's"... we really need to learn to use some of it for the "why not's!!", especially as we get older.

LOL. You know how old people could get, I mean no offense to the elderly, but they just say stuff that is sometimes weird when heard by other people. She probably didn't mean anything by it, or at least, she didn't thought that what she's saying will mean something like that.

I can only hope she didn´t mean to be mean, lol. You should have seen the face of her husband. He looked so sad, poor guy.

Well, maybe the lasy didn't mean so much that he wouldn't be around to wear them. Maybe she meant at his age his gear doesn't get much wear and tear. Or maybe she just meant that he really doesn't need to concern himself about fashion at that age. I think with long married couples, it could have meant about anything, given the decades of history they probably have benteen them.

The tone of her voice "suggested" that he wouldn´t be around to wear them. Thanks for answering.

Does that really the case when you are old already? That it seems like you are just waiting for your time... I think that should not be the case when we grow old, we should still find time to do the things we used to when we were still young. There's nothing wrong with buying new clothes when you grow old. Huh, i feel sad for the old man...How I wish I am her granddaughter and buy him clothes...
