Ohhh myyy ... slurp ... it's .. it's ... it's truly SUPERB .... the scrumptious smell of drying strawberries and bananas is almost more than a body can stand ... I'm practically salivating ... it's just wonderful ... and as the fruits dry the flavours and aromas are intensifying and becoming even more slurpilicious ...
How on earth will I be able to wait another 7 hours ... bet you can all guess what I'll be having in my home made yoghurt in the morning ...
Has anyone got a dehydrator and if so what do you use yours for ??
PS .. sorry I haven't been around much .. I just needed some 'space' away from the computer ..

I can hear that slurping from here! I got really worried there when I read the title and I thought OMG it's Toots, she needs one of those machines, slaps head, d'oh! As I read on the penny drops, never heard of a dehydrator but making yoghurt, my that sounds yummy, make sure you save me some ;0)

I would love to have a dehydrator. We had one many years ago, but tossed it out after it broke during a move. We made a lot of dried fruits on it before it met its demise.
I was watching Good Eats on Food TV last night and he devised a homemade dehydrator to make beef jerky with. I wonder if it would work with fruit? I guess I will have to check out the site.

I love that guy on Goods Eats.
I didn't know you could make a home dehydrator. I am going to have to look that up. :) He explains things so well, he is a wealth of information. :)

Well welcome back Patootie!!! It is nice to see you and your wonderful descriptions of your ever expanding kitchen gadgets. :)
I remember that story of the pasta cooker...that was awesome! :)
Now a dehydrator. Hmmm...I had one long time ago and used to like to make fresh fruit roll ups for my kids. But after moving so many times...my partner took it upon himself one time to throw it away.
It had been packed up for some time after a move and it wasn't used for a while....so he figured that I didn't want it anymore.
I haven't had the heart to buy another. :(
But it is wonderful to hear that you are enjoying your's! :)
It really is hard to wait that amount of time because it truly does fill the house with wonderful smells!!!

MMMMMmmmmmmm those strawberries scented the whole house with a summery fragrance .. and .. well .. they were just so uber delicious .. I'm afraid I have scoffed the lot ... giggles ... dried they were twice as nice as fresh .. the flavours really intensify .. the strawberries were tangy and richly flavoured .. the bananas literally had my drooling in anticipation .. got a nice big jar FULL of dried bananas to put with my home made yoghurt ..

Yes I love my dehydrator. I use it mainly for banana chips and beef jerky. I have this old family recipe for beef jerky I got from my grandfather.
The problem with it is I find it's too much fuss and not really worth the effort. I mean marinating the beef for 12 hours and the waiting all that time for it to dehydrate. Chances are if I want beef jerky or banana chips it's much easier just to go down to the the store and pick some up. But it is useful for things like big gatherings and fund raising. My father actually sold beef jerky one summer out of a fruit stand .

This is very true .. it is much easier to just go and buy some ... but unless you know the person who's made it do you really know what's gone into it .. are the ingredients really fresh and wholesome ... have they washed their hands often enough .. has it been stored away from bugs and dust ... I really do think if we can spare the time it's worthwhile making foods from scratch ..

Very true. Plus I mean just the relaxing feeling you get from cooking. But for me most days I don't have time, or I like to kid myself into thing I don't have the time. I guess I'll just have to trust in whatever laws food preparation business's have to abide by.

Are you still enjoying your dehydrator after a year? I still love mine I have had this one for 3 years. I had one before it for many years too. I love doing fruit, fruit roll ups, herbs, and jerky in mine.
