have you ever called the police on someone breaking the car seat laws for kids? I passed a vehicle today that had a small child around 2 years old in their car seat in the front seat of their vehicle! Would you call the police? What about if you've see a car where the kids are in the back or front but obviously not buckled in?

Well, It's not neccesarily illegal to have a child in a carseat in the front seat. Some people don't have any other choice. I wouldn't call the cops on them, unless I knew they were in direct violation of the law, and were so willingly. And even then, I would problably try to talk to them about it beforehand. There are a lot of variables here that you could consider, maybe they don't have any working seat belts in the back seat, and many people can not simply afford to go and have them replaced, or installed, or buy a newer vehicle. If they don't have airbags in the front, then really it's not much different then having them in the back seat. Maybe the person was simply ignorant of the laws or of safety issues. Maybe it was a sitter, or a friend watching the baby, and they were unsure of the procedures. I think It would be a little hasty to call the police and report them immediately. If I knew them personally, I would say something to them, if I didn't, I might still say something to them if given the opportunity. Also, there are certain carseats that are designs specifically for trucks, that don't have back seats, so maybe they were using one of those? You never know. Of course, it prob. wouldn't do much harm to report them, if it turns out that any of these reasons I suggested were the cause, but I would hate to waste the officer's time and the other person's time, when I didn't know for sure that a law was being broken.

Even if it was the best friend in the world. I would still have to turn them in. too many children have been killed this way, and that is why seat belt laws for children are so strong. Yes I would call the police!

i have an aqaintance that puts his daughter in the car seat in the front with him. he's my neighbours's who is my best friend's nefew. i saw it one day when i was taking the car seat out of his car and putting it in mine to take his daughter out somewhere. his daughter is my daughter's best friend. anyway his mother was watching me and she asked if it was in the front. i said yes and that is elegal and dangerous. she talked to him about it, then a week later i saw him pull into the drivway next door and the seat was back in the front. because we know each other well i'm not sure what to do. people have told him how dangerous it is but i don't think i could call the cops on him.

I think unless you are IN the vehicle yourself and can know for sure exactly what is going on, it could be quite rude to call the police over it. First of all laws can vary from state to state so you would have to know that what you were seeing was in fact against the law. In many places it is not illegal to place the car seat in the front passenger seat provided the car is not equipped with a front passenger side air bag. Unless you personally were in that vehicle, how do you know it had an airbag and was in violation with the small child in the front seat? Also there are still vehicles with lap belts only. Children in lap belts can move around quite a bit and it would be impossible to tell from outside of the vehicle that they were in fact buckled in.

I don't think that I would call the police but I wish that people would learn what is safe for their children, I hate it when I see kids not buckled in but I live in the country and alot of people do things like that around here unfortunatly.
