Does anyone else like to write stories? I'm retired and wanted something to fill my time. I found a writers group that meets twice a month. It's wonderful to get together, read our work and have it critiqued. We help each other with grammar, punctuation, correct word usage and many other I also like to write poetry.

Okay. This is actually the first paragraph of a story I've written. Critique it, change to suit your story or use as is and then write!
Gina's announcement had devastated him. She wanted a divorce. She'd moved out, taking the children with her. Ten years of marriage down the tubes. Dwayne shook his head, letting his mind go back through the years. Had there been a sign he'd missed? Could he recall any segment of time and say "this is where it began"?

That wasn't a very good topic to give you, especially since I've written the story. How about we change it? Let's see.......
"The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure..........."
Aha! That's where I lost it.

John went along the street for hours and hours, and then he saw a corner around. There was a man leaning against the wall at the corner. The man wore a coat as ragged as a scarecrow's,and his face with messy beard was full of dirt and dust. His eyes was closed but when John got closed to him,he suddenly opened his eyes and stared at John's.They were two brown eyes, just like a hole to make you falling in.John shocked and realized that the man was himself....

Hi Swtrose
I love to write poetry also. Mine are usually long ones although I have a few short ones. The other day I came up with:
If the best is yet to come
One wonders where it's coming from.
Have you had any poems published? I've entered a couple of contests but haven't won anything. I find most magazines want short stories and poems.

I am more of a long-winded storyteller but have recently tried my hand at short stories and am enjoying it. I had one published in a local magazine. I am trying to work on another but have come to a block. Two others have been submitted to literary magazines and I am waiting to hear back. I write poetry as well. Sometimes I write a lot of poetry and then, like now, I will dry up for awhile.
I am also a member of a writing group in my area that meets once every two weeks on a formal basis, and then on alternating weeks we meet on a casual basis where sometimes we never even get around to writing because we like to chat. Of course we talk about writing and being published.
We also take advantage of any seminars or workshops that are in our area. Because of this I have met quite a few published authors. I am meeting another one this coming Friday for a one-on-one critique of a short story I wrote.
Welcome to myLot. Hope you find many writing friends here who will help you with your endeavour.

I love writing short stories, but it's been a long time since I've written one. This bothers me because it was such a gratifying experience. I've been experiencing a terrible bout of writer's block. I'll work my way out of it eventually, though.
