What are some good ways to get The Sims 2 to run smoothly on my computer? Preferably while it's running in a window, since when the game runs full-screen I don't know when people are IMing me, which happens so rarely, it only happens when I least expect it and am otherwise occupied. I close any other programs on the task bar, and most times I even follow the Sims 2: Season's instruction book tips on closing any hidden programs from the Task manager run by the user (me). Are there any other tips? And how would I go about doing them?

Open your Sims 2, select a household, then go to the options panel you can set the performance there.
close some effects can make speed faster.
lower the texturing can also help.
well, these are not-so-good ways, the best way is to upgrade your RAM or your display card.

it depends on your computer. You should know which motherboard you are currently using, otherwise you may have bought a card which is not compatible with your motherboard. For RAM, 1 GB or above will be ok for The Sims 2.
If you really want to upgrade your computer, you should consult your computer manufacturer.

I have 960 MB RAM currently, but I was lead to believe that there was a way to allocate some memory from my hard drive to RAM without opening up my computer and fiddling around finicky and temperamental electrical hardware. I'm guessing this is most likely not true, since of late I've come to realize that computers certainly deserve no such sensationalist praise from society as being the great technological advance we've been lead to believe they were.
