Buying carpet

For the first time in my life I have to buy carpet. I've always lived in places where either the carpets were ok, or I couldn't afford to do anything about the carpets. Now, I'm moving to a new house and it needs carpets. But what sort of carpets to choose? Natural fibres or man-made? What colour? Should it all be one colour, or different colours in different rooms? Any advice or experiences would be very appreciated.
