A cat just being a cat

Have you ever wanted to be upset with a cat for doing what comes naturally? We have several cats and one of ours goes in and out. Well a few months ago we found that we had a new visitor in our garage. A little mouse. He had been someone's pet you could tell by how he acted. We let him continue to stay in the garage and we gave him food and water. He was very cute. Well tonight our cat Oliver got him. He'd gotten him before but we managed to get Mr. Jingles (we named him after the mouse in the Green Mile) free. Tonight we couldn't until after it was too late. I know Oliver was just doing what comes natural but it still makes me upset. Here was this cute little mouse who wasn't harming anything. He just roamed around the garage and looked cute. I know it's silly to be upset about him but I can't seem to help it. Has anyone else been upset when their cat has done what comes natural to them?

I'm sorry about you mouse :( That's so sad! (love the name you had for him though - as soon as I read it I smiled) It's completely understandable too for you to be upset. You embraced him as a pet :)
I get upset with our cats for just being themselves too but they've never done anything quite like that before. And since it's not been as bad I just have to tell myself over and over "They're cats, that's what they do".

Thanks. I'm glad you liked the name for him, it just seemed to fit with how he showed up that way, and also Oliver. He was named after the kitten from Oliver and Company.

one of my cats got into a nest of bunnies - she appeared to think that the baby bunnies were kittens. Unfortunately this was a bad situation for the bunnies - the mom rabbit abandoned the den and the cat was not 'in a condition' to feed the babies.
that was hard, but its not something you can 'explain' to the cat either.

Yeah it's a little hard to explain to them that they can't. I had a male dog once adopt a litter of kittens. He couldn't understand why he couldn't feed them either.

My stepson had a hamster several years ago that got loose in our apartment. My old cat Bogie was a very good hunter and hunted the hamster for 2 days. He finally caught him and killed him. I didn't have the heart to tell my step-son that the cat had caught and killed the hamster. I wrapped him in a grocery bag and buried him. I let the boy think that the hamster just ran away.

Oh I know what you mean. My niece doesn't know and we don't plan on telling her either. If she asks we figure we'll just say we haven't seen him and perhaps he's moved on. I don't want her upset at the cat or at losing Mr. Jingles.

Yes I know what you mean.My cats sometimes knock things over and then there was the time I didcovered they had been using my favorite indoor tree for a litter box.I kept changing the box not being able to figure out why I could smell bad kitty smell when the box was so clean...then my tree started getting brown leaves and the leaves started dropping...Killed the tree before I figured it out...Oh well...

Oh no the poor tree. I know my cats love to eat and attack any flowers we bring into the house. We finally gave up and just have some artificials ones.

Just recently, I mentioned to my neighbor, that my cat had killed a baby rabbit. I was already feeling bad, but when my neighbor said,"oh, the little baby rabbit I've been seeing around here?" I was very upset after that! Then I realized there was nothing I could have done. The cat was just doing what came natural to him. Don't be so hard on yourself!

Yes! Our cat keeps trying to kill out Beta fish. He swims around in a small bowl on top of the entertainment center in our bedroom. Twice in the middle of the night our cat has gotten up there and knocked him off. We have to get up out of the bed and resuce the fish! Urrgg! I totaly understand your frustration.

Oh yeah I've had that happen with beta fish, one reason we don't have one now. We have had cats though just drink out of the water tank of fish. They don't hurt the fish but they drink from it. Go figure.

LOL This is funny, I think most cat owners have felt the way you do. Seems like when I get just about asleep, my cat wants to come and lick my face. LOL YUCK - I just want to sleep. I reach up and pet her for a few minutes then I cover my head. LOL

That's so upsetting...how sad. Poor Mr Jingles. I think it's just as natural for you to be upset as it was for Oliver to do what he did.
On Friday night my Banjo caught a mouse in the front yard. I was worried it was a field mouse (a marsupial, not a rodent) but it turned out to be a rodent so I went inside not worried, figuring, better to let Banjo play than have the thing pooing inside and eating through stuff. Well, eventually Banjo bought his new "friend" onto the front porch. It was deceased by then. from the front porch it was brought inside and Banjo proceeded to roll about and flick the thing in the air so it could "fly". I was cooking dinner and didn't want to touch the mouse or the cat, so I was telling him to go outside and play (as if he would listen or obey)but no, he kept playing with his friend. And then it happened. Banjo ate it. I was horrified and gagging and thinking "there'll be gory bits on the rug" but luckily I was saved that.
I was pretty glad Banjo slept on the couch that night instead of with me. What an animal!

Did you really expect him to obey? They never do. They love to play with things where we can see it.
Yeah I'd be worried about seeing that mess too but also I couldn't deal with seeing him eat it. Our one cat Fluffy has caught a bird and eaten it and it made me sick. Thankfully I only saw a second of it. Oliver likes to also play with the geckos around here, little lizards, but thankfully we can usually rescue them before he kills them.

when i lived in arizona,i used to have geckos that also lived in the house-they'd just get in somehow.
i didn't mind them as they would eat things like roaches-everybody in my area had them, you just couldn't get rid of them (unless you had the geckos).
my russian blue, however, used to beat them and leave them somewhere to die.i'd be so mad at him.
i'd rescue them whenever possible, but sometimes he was quicker than me.
poor lil' gecko :(

We have geckos and palmetto bugs (large cockroaches) here in Florida as well. The cats will get the palmetto bugs that come in and those are fine by me. The geckos for the most part know to stay out of the house but Oliver will get one of those now and then but usually we can rescue them in time.

I'm sorry for the little mouse.
My cat made many things that made me to be upset on him and this things was natural for my cat to do. I'll give you some examples :
One day when my cat was alone in my house he caught a little bird from my balcony and when I arrived home I sow the feathers of the little bird. I was so angry on him and I bit him a little.
My cat has a bad habit: he carry the food that I give him in my brother's room under bed. It make me to be upset on my cat because he should eat in the kitchen.
He has another bad habit: every night he meowing few minutes
because he want to be pet. This thing make me angry because I hate to be awaked for nothing.

yep, it's probably natural to be upset when cats do things like that because we expect them not to do it. but they're just cute animals...i love cats, so if my cat were to do that, i'll probably give it a gentle smack on the head lol...and start loving it back again ;)

I have a bit problem that confuse me about my kitten.
He cry a lot.
I just adopted him 5 days ago. I named him Lee.
And i can't even move in my room hearing him cry.
Even when i just milking him until his stomach chubby, he still crying.
It bugs my ear.
Do you have any suggestion?

You might also try giving him a stuffed animal to curl up with. That can help sooth them. Depending on how old he is he might need solid food and not milk for his stomach. It might help.
