Heya, I have one of those catdoors you can set to either - open, closed, incoming or outgoing with a little clip. I have had it about 2 years with no hassles. Recently I have noticed that when I lock them in at night time, that sometimes they get out but i thought it was just my daughter who is three, fidling with the lock.
until last night that is.. I saw my female cat open the catdoor by herself to let herself out... She sure is clever!! and it is somewhat annoying as you can tell because now it doesn't work to lock them in at night.
So, whilst I am very impressed with her intelligence, now i do not know what to do to keep them in at night.
Anyway, just wanted to share with you all what happened as I was soo surprised..
Tanika.

LOL - yes - they are very clever! I gave up on the lockable cat flaps ages ago, because my 5 figured out a way to open them. Sasha can even open normal dors by standing on his hind legs and pushing the door handles down with his front paws or with his nose. He can also open the fridge and the freezer. Wilby is not quite so clever - but he is very large and quite heavy - so his way of getting through anything is just to push and push until he breaks it:-))

What a clever cat. Just to keep her safe you will need to outsmart her. LOL

Hi Tanika, Well I do not have a cat any more but I used to when I was growing up and also my neighbour for many years had a cat with this kind of door for the cat, Oh yes cats are extremely cleaver, that is a pity that you cannot lock the cats inside now but I hope that you will work something out good luck.

LOL...My two girls do that, so now it is totally useless. I cannot lock them in either because we have door handles (not knobs) and they jump up and open the door and let themselves out. Oh they think they are so smart when they come waltzing out..Its hilarious.

Cats are really smart creatures and if there is something they want they will find a way to get it. We don't have a catdoor but our youngest cat has found a way to open those little "eye and hook" locks or latch whatever you wanna call it. We had to put it on one of the cabinet doors so that you wouldn't destroy all the toilet paper. She figured out how to open it yesterday and went to town. It's amazing what they can do sometimes.
