i have a friend who once worked at a centre for unwanted cats, as a volunteer. recently she told me a story about how one of the oldest cat there, buddy, was put to sleep, to give space for more incoming, younger cats. being a catlover, how would one comprehend such situation? isn't that a wrong thing to do to cats? as a more powerful species, does it give us rights to perform such procedure? by the way, that day was the last day she volunteered there.

what??? putting a cat to sleep to give way to others?? T_T that's so cruel! why can't they put the cats up for adoption?? i'm a cat lover too! i dont think it's right to do such thing, although i've had cats who has been put to sleep before because they were sick and we didn't want them to suffer any longer. it broke my heart :(

Hi Dedischado, Please dont feel sad. The world is too cruel. They want to kill all the innocent. It is not only a matter of cats but infact all such animals including dogs. I really feel sad for these creatures. They are such lovely and cute things and how can someone just kill it. Dont they feel a bit of the pauin the animal suffers, or do they not have a bit of the huuman skin. I have lost three of my dogs the same way. They were not direct pets but street dogs whom we used to feed, play with, take some amount of care for. One early morning they were uplifted and tortured. Later people tolfd me that these animals are killed. I went into tears and still miss those dogs. This is a very wrong and criminal act. Something must be done by law.

it is sad but really theres only so many they can take in.but yes it dosnt sound fair it would be better to put the human who dumped the cat in the first place to sleep

It is very sad but when animals are in certain shelters, there just isn't enough room for all the cats that people don't want or that go astray.
They don't really have much choice, if there were less people allowing cats to breed so often, then there'd be less unwanted cats having to go to these shelters.
We have places like that here & as sad as it is, there's not really anything anyone can do until people stop taking on dogs & later realising they cant keep them any more.
There was a shelter here for dogs only that had a no destroy policy & we got a lot of our dogs from there but they were more of a family thing so they had to close down due to not having enough funding to keep the place going.
I couldn't work or volunteer at a place like that coz i get so attached to the cute little animals but some of the older animals wont ever be rehomed coz very few people actually want to adopt older animals, as sad as that is. Everyone usually goes for the cute little puppies.

Very very sad, but unfortuntely these things happen. There just isnt the resources to look after so many cats. But I do understand where you coming from, we think that we can just do whatever we like and that we are a more powerful species, yes that may true, but some of us have consciences.

That's so awful! I love cats too, and I can't imagine just killing an innocent animal just because of a lack of space. I know it can cause issues if there aren't isn't enough space to take care of all the animals, but it seems like they could try to come up with some other solution besides just killing the animal! It seems like the purpose of a place like that would be to save the unwanted cats, so it sure would defeat the purpose to kill them that way!

THAT IS HORRIBLE! I love cats too. And to do that would be totally wrong! Its one thing when they are sick or in pain or dying already. Another cause they are older than the new ones coming in. I'd have quit too, thats really not nice!

It's unfortunate that pet rescuers have to make lousy decisions like this all the time--I happen to know a lot of pet rescuers, and the sad fact that shelters are overwhelmed with pets...one rescuers said the situation is so bad that they have trouble adopting out two year old pets..and that's not old--and another rescuer said if you think no-kill shelters are no-kill she said think again...the grim statistics is that for every single pet in shelters to be adopted out every single person in this country would have to be willing to adopt at least nine pets...NINE...and no it is far from easy being in the pet rescue business...when you can help a pet it's great...but when you have to make the lousy decision to put pets down it downright sucks The reason for putting older pets down is unfortunately due to the fact that most people want cute cuddly kittens or puppies, not a pet say over the age of eight...I know I'm speaking from my own experience and dealing with pet rescuers

Welcome to the world of animal shelters. Thousands of animals, perfectly healthy happy animals are put to sleep every day because there is simply not room. No kill shelters are not necessarily the answer to this problem - they turn away over 80% of the animals that need to come in - either because they're not perfectly adoptable or they have no room. Then those animals either end up out in the streets, creating more kittens and puppies or at a kill shelter. Me personally, I would rather have my cat put to sleep by someone who cares than hit by a car while running wild or live in a cage for 3 years. (the no kill shelter here has many many cats that have been there in tiny cages for 2+ years - what sort of life is that??)
I love cats and have two of them, but education is the key. Spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership. No kill is not the answer.
