Whole milk for infants

My doctor said I could introduce whole milk to my son at 9mnths of age. So when he was 9 mnths I started out with it in his cereal. Which was probably about 1/4cup of milk a day. Just recently I've started weaning him off of breastfeeding during the day as I'll be going back to work in 2 or 3 weeks. So I've been giving him a sippy cup with milk in it. I don't expect him to replace breastmilk with whole milk, as he'll still nurse about 4 times a day, but not in the middle of the day. So far milk is what he likes to drink. He won't take water, and juice is sometimes ok, sometimes not. The most Milk he's had is 7oz in a day. Now I'm getting told by other people that Cow's milk is very bad for him, and I need to put him on Formula. I don't want to because these same people say that at 12 months he can have cows milk. So I'm a bit confused. Why would my doctor say to put him on Milk, and the other healthcare professionals in this province agree, if it was going to hurt him. Does it matter that it's only a supplement, and it's not replacing breast milk?

I would tend to believe the doctor over what other people say. I put my kids on whole milk at 9 months also. They are all healthy teens now. You will find throughout your childs life, everyone has their own opinions on what you do with your child. Stick to what your doctor says and ignore the others.

That is definitely true, the experts change what they say is best for the children all the time. I think you are doing the best thing....researching all aspects and then go with what you feel is best for your child.

Everyone definitely does have an opinion! But I am open to hearing different opinions. That way I can make an informed decision. I mean what the "experts" say always changes anyways. Do this, don't do that, and then 10 years later they'll be saying the opposite!

Hello! My doc suggests starting infants on whole milk at 10months, as long as they are eating the majority of their food from table foods. I'm not sure if I am going to do this or not though, it does seem young to me, so maybe i'll start with 1 cup of whole milk a day at that age and the rest formula. Although most docs I have heard recommend 1 year for starting on whole milk

Ihave 3 kids and with all of them I switched from formula to whole milk when they were about 7 months old. It never hurt them, as a matter of fact my kids are the healthiest their doctor says he has ever seen. You need to do what's right for you, and not worry about what everyone else thinks. As long as your child is happy and healthy that's all that matters.

A baby's digestive system can't digest cow's milk proteins. It's really not a good idea to give them whole milk at such a young age. It can cause serious problems. Maybe your kids are healthy, but there are well known facts out there that say it's not so healthy to start so early. It's a fact that kids do have problems when they start milk at such a early age. My sister was in and out of the hospital with her daughter and she started her daughter on milk around 10 months. The doctors said that was way to early.

Well, as I guess most discussions about children go, this is just one of those cases where the docs have varying opinions. My family doctor saw no problem with it, and neither did the two doctors I used to work for.

I'm starting to think that it's another one of those depends on the child scenarios. Just like starting solids. WHO reccomends waiting til' 6 months, and we were pretty close to that, but he was more than ready when we started. He'd been trying to eat with us for 2-3 weeks. He'd open his mouth and wait lol. He was sitting up on his own before 5mnths.

Well if cow's milk is bad for him, then by all means don't put him on formula-that's made from cows milk! His body can't digest cows milk this early, the proteins and and iron are too harsh.

most of it's made from cows milk, I think the only other source is soy, but it would say that on the front of the can.

I had no idea that formula was made from cows milk! Thanks! It wouldn't make that much sense to take him off cows milk, and put him on cows milk... Will have to see what else I can find!

I'm just referring to that some people don't drink cows milk because the food that cows digest has chemicals in it, the hormones that some cows get-that's why it would be silly to worry about that aspect and put the kid on formula made from cows milk. I can't remember what actress it was, but she said she didn't nurse because she was worried about environmental toxins going through her body to her baby-so she put her baby on cows milk formula, and this was before they came out with organic formula.

Theres alot of people who are parents who think they know it all. I have 5 kids and i dont proclaim to know everything there is about children but I know alot. I would go with your doctor on this one. If you are still unsure seek the advice of another healthcare professional. My doctor told me to put my children on formula until they were a year old. After that you want to put them on whole milk. It is supposed to help the brain develop better. Again go with what your doctor tells you. They would not tell you something if it was going to harm your baby. Good luck

What my doctor said was to give her half whole milk and half formula at 11 months to see how she takes, but at 9 months give her yougurt or cheese to see how she deals with dairy. So far so good. I would ask your doctor if you are worried.

There are so many differing opinions. I was told I could start him on yogurt and cheese at 7 mnths. I started him just before 8 mnths and he absolutely loves both, moreso cheese!

I know it si crazy, but Ultimatley it is down to you. If you see that there is a problem digesting the whole milk then wait a lttle longer. I guess I got lucky my daugter will drink anything water or juice.

Below is an artical I found for you and I agree with it 100%. Please read it and if you want more information on this and want to continue to read on, I will include a link to where I got this info from at the bottom. Hope it helps. There are several reasons to delay the introduction of cow's milk until your baby reaches his first birthday. Most important, a baby's digestive system can't digest cow's milk proteins. Cow's milk also has too much sodium, potassium, and chloride, which can tax your baby's kidneys. Even if his system could handle it, cow's milk doesn't have all the vitamins and minerals (especially vitamin E, zinc, and iron) that he needs for growth and development in his first year. Giving a baby cow's milk could even cause iron deficiency and internal bleeding. And it can increase his risk of an allergic reaction. Once your baby's digestive system is ready to digest it, though, milk becomes a powerful ally. A great source of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, and magnesium, milk will build your toddler's bones and teeth and help his body regulate his blood coagulation and muscle control. Almost all milk is fortified with vitamin D, which helps the body absorb the calcium it needs. Milk also provides protein for growth, as well as carbohydrates, which will give your child the energy he needs to toddle all day! And if your child gets enough calcium from the get-go, there's evidence that he'll have a lower risk of high blood pressure, stroke, colon cancer, and hip fractures later in life. Thanks for the link. Interesting reading. Although I'm not planning on it for his growth. From what I've been told he should be nursing 3-4 times a day + eating solids. I'm still planning on nursing him 3-4 times a day - once before work, once when we get home, once before bed, and he still wakes up once a night to nurse.

My grandchildren were on formula untill they were 12 months old then they drank cows milk. This is what the doctor said. I think every doctor has different rules. When my kids were babies I had them on formula for only 2 weeks and went to cows milk. had cereal at 2 weeks,
