A Scanner Darkly is a movie based on the novel of the same name, by Philip K. Dick. I have never read the novel (or anything by Philip for that matter), but being a fan of science fiction and fantasy, I know that this author's name rings bells in the science fiction community (think Asimov, Bear, Clark, etc.).
I also know that many of his novels and/or short stories have gone on to make or inspire many popular movies such as: Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report to name a few.
So I admit that I did enter into this movie with preconceived notions...I thought it was going to be good, like one of those overlooked movies that's excellent but a lot of people didn't get to see, like Mirrormask. (later I learned that this movie grossed about $5 million at the box office and won numerous film critics' awards...go figure)
Well, I was wrong.

Though initially I thought it amusing, the effects began to become a little tiresome. My eyes were getting tired from it!
Still, watching Robert Downey Jr. is always a pleasure.
After the shock wore off, I was both confused and amused by the inner workings of the main character's life. Did I really want to watch people smoke pot in front of me? Not when I was unable to! (And that's all of the time for me, now.)
So it felt like I was back in a friend's basement, listening to all the idiotic things that get discussed when folks are high.
Finally, the ending gave me some idea of what the film had been leading to.
I almost thought of watching it again, knowing what was going on, to get a better fell for the film.
Not today, I'm afraid. Perhaps I might, a few months down the road, when I can be freshly amused.

You're right, the movie did make me feel like I was watching a bunch of people that are high and I'm the only sober one.
When in a situation like that you can only laugh at them being high or feel left out. This movie made me feel left out...and bored.

The funny thing is, you summed up my whole article very nicely.
"I had high hopes for the film and was disappointed in it...was quite boring."
Thats pretty much everything I said. I'm thinking of reading the book sooner or later. I'm sure it was much, much better.

I saw A Scanner Darkly a while back and I have to say I really enjoyed it...it was confusing at times but I really did like it and plan on buying the book (or at least getting it from the library) in the near future....

I just can't understand how someone could really like this film. I could understand how this film would make you want to read the book. But the film itself was just so boring. Definitely not something you would want to watch with a friend.

Yes, this movie give a new style of moive, but unfortunately, they selected a bad story, when I watched the preview of the movie, I could not wait to see it, but when I real sew it, I could not fall to sleep after about 45 mins, the story are so boring.

Well, I think the story was quite good, just poorly executed on film...actually, it probably shouldn't have been filmed at all. I still haven't read the book, but the story in the movie gave me the impression that the book is probably a very good, very deep read.

This question doesn't really refer to your post much, but do you know if the score was by "Radiohead". I remember reading up on it awhile ago and Radiohead was on board to score the movie, but i think that they might have pulled out of it. Do you have any idea?
