As most of you know I moved away from my last Place 3 1/2 months ago
I have a bottom Floor Flat which I love, I live in a Village now which is lovely, but I have upstairs neighbors who I do believe think they are Elephants
I mean I know they can't tip toe but when you go to bed at night and all you hear is thump thump thump it gets annoying, it was that bad the other Day it made me Jump
I mean I am not going to complain as it is not my Style and I know they have to move about but I can't understand that they have to thump like Elephants to be honest
At this precise moment it sounds like they are throwing Furniture about and jumping up and down
No they have no Kids, if they did that to me would be normal as Kids need to have their freedom to play
But honest you want to sit here and listen to it
I keep thinking they are going to come through the Ceiling one Day hahahaha
Its ok when they do I will make them a coffee and make them welcome as long as they don't land on my Computer then I would be angry lol
Do you have neighbors that can be noisy?????

Oh gabs. I got all excited because I thought you wanted to talk about real elephants. I collect elephant figurines and anything relating to elephants. But anyway, I used to have that problem with noisey upstairs neighbors but they had kids. And this kid would ride his bigwheel around the house at 5:30 in the morning. I was not real happy about that. Now we own our own place but the guy across the street reves up his motorcylcye about 5:30 in the morning too.

Ha ha ha Gabs, I sympathise, I got a herd of rhinos upstairs! Unmusical rhinos at that. In the early hours an unearthly "donnnnnnng" rings out at intervals - he is playing the organ - and then after about half an hour it changes to "diiiiiiiiiiing" and the woman has a good stamp around, then they lose something and every door and cupboard is slammed. Sometimes the TV lurches into top volume life too.
I think you will find that is life in flats. Probably if you had the chance to walk about upstairs, and hear what it sounds like, you would find that actually it takes very little effort to make an enormous noise.
I have so called sound proofing and I am also on the deaf register as I have lost the upper register of my hearing and have difficulty in understanding speech. The lower register, which hears bumps and bangs, functions totally, sigh!

Believe me, Ducks, if you could hear you walking you too would sound like an elephant, or maybe a very large stork. The accoustics and the fact that there is a vast empty space below the floor all serve to amplify even the sound of a mouse coughing.
I would recommend ear plugs and a shake awake alarm, and if something really occurs that you need to know about, you know you can rely on Gissi to bound all over you :-)

we have really god neighbours pal but we are in a semi detached , 40 years ago we were in a house in Stirling the council bought all the houses to build on ( now the telephone exchange) we got the choice of house and we took the top flat ( $ high) people used to think we were strange picking the top one but it was because of what you have now , people up above us , It was hard sometimes dumping a coach built pram up and down 4 flights of stairs most days but it was worth it to have peace and quiet , remember to put this discussion off when you hear them upstairs , I would hate fotr them to fall through the ceiling only to read about themselves on My Lot xx

Oh my Gabs - I do feel sorry for you. I used to live in a grund floor flat once too, and everytime my neighbours walked across the room, it felt like the roof was caving in! Thankfully now, I live in a semi-detached house, and our neighbours are really quiet.... only time we ever heard them was when their kids were at home, and their son used to have his friends round whenever his parents went out for the evening (LOL!) - but he has left home now, and we hardly ever hear them! Good luck with the elephants!

Thyats why when i'm on holiday i always book the top floor so i don't get the noise!
Its very annoying but without complaining or moving i can't see what you can do. As i live in a house our problem is different one lot of neighbours insist on banging and working on making noises continually even bank holidays!

Hello Sweet Gabs, I understand it must be tough dealing with noisy neighbours upstairs and that too in a village. I thought villages were quieter. Try to be outdoors more often with Gissi hopefully both of you can have fun. I know it is not your style to complain but try talking talking to them if it helps or seek guidance if required. It is good you have not lost your sense of humour. In tough times being witty really helps. Good luck. have a nice day . :)

Thank you Banta but no it is not to the Extened where I have to say something
It is quiet here apart from the Noisy Idiot in his Car that seems to think he can speed along the Road at night lol
If it should ever get to much then I will see the Landlord as I they don't seem the kind of Couple that is approachable to be honest

Poor Gabs. Hugs. It is a good thing they are a working couple. Noisy neighbors are the reason I live on the last floor of my apartment block. I live in a noisy neighborhood. :( Getting an apartment with compatible neighbors on the same level is not easy. I can hear neighbors on the lower floors dragging their furniture on the tiled floors, people using their choppers tok, tok, toking away, the boom of bass from my lower floor teenage neighbor. Most of the buildings here are made of concrete.

That is so sad my friend. When your lease is up, have you considered a garden, side by side apartment? I have not lived in an apartment with that problem in more years than I want to remember. That is all I can suggest, or speaking nicely and tactfully to them. That is, if the elephants understand? :) Good luck sugar. P.S. How are you feeling these days?

Aww bless you Gabs.
Some of my friends live in flats, and it doesn't really matter what position you're in you normally find that living in a flat means you're either being annoyed or being annoying to others. When I left home and was looking for our first place, we were lucky enough to find a 'maisonette' (I think there are pics on some old post).
I didn't like the idea of listening to someone elses noise or having to abate my own noise in consideration of neighbours, so a flat didn't look like a good option. We were still attached to 3 other maisonettes, but the only loud noises were when people would stomp up and down the stairs.
I feel a bit guilty now, as we bought a bungalow, so our neighbours here are elderly and very quiet, so with madam screaming into the early hours, we must seem like the neighbours from hell!

Rhino with Children it is something you expect
I mean when I lived in my House with the Kids my next Door Neighbors Girl is fully disabled and she used to get bad in the night and I used to hear her but it never bothered me as I knew screaming was the only way she could put it across that she is in Pain
The poor Girl is 23 and she can't talk or anything like that
Her Parents used to apologize and I used to tell them not to as the poor Girl is not well and it is something that I do not class as disturbance it is life

I see what you mean about the difference between unavoidable and un-necessary noise. My brother lives in a pretty rough block of flats and all weekend he's had the thump-thump-thump of hardcore rave music until the early hours, now that would really do my head in!

Right now I don't thankfully but when I lived in an apartment a few years ago I did. I was actually on the second floor at the time and the first floor people were the problem. The one was a 17 or 18 year old with these huge speakers. He'd blast his music so loud that the rialing on the stairs vibrated not to mention my whole apartment. I could sit on the couch and feel the vibrations from his music. I complained a lot to the managers and had to call security on them a few times at night.

You are allowed to be a bit grumpy especailly when you are tired. I know I get that way myself. Glad to hear it's not that bad. Maybe you could try talking with them? Perhaps they don't realize how loud they are being?

I live in a house now. But when I lived in Turkey I lived in a downstairs apartment and it was the same thing. It seemed that they would start stomping around the time my husband and I would go to bed. I think they were night owls. There is not a lot you can say about it. My husband was in a bad mood one night and he took a broomstick handle and started hitting it against the ceiling. The response was the noise got louder. I made mention to him what exactly did that accomplish since they already making noise so what you did was not going to bother them at all. He just mentioned to me it got the frustration off his chest. Go figure.

oh my goodness. i am so sorry to hear this. and of course you love your place...all but that. we are finally on the top floor right now. and it's wonderful as we don't have noise above us. however, i think there are a dozen people living below us. we've observed several coming and going. we know their cars and such. anyway, they're not too loud surprisingly, but it's just the traffic. they tromp up and down the stairs SO LOUDLY. our stairs have no padding, so it sounds like they are stomping SO LOUD. and with all of them coming and going all hours of the day and night, it gets old. i have several other stories of bad neighbors, such as we ordered a dvd player, and the delivery guy was supposed to bring it to the office as we knew we wouldn't be home, yea, he left outside our door, and the neighbor across the way stole it, how did we find out? he told us as we were moving out, "yea, i stole your dvd player, what now?" and he took off running, jerk. and we've had lots of drunks, and some crazy old people....ha. i had my neighbors break into my place when i was living alone, i CAUGHT THEM, i mean c'mon, idiots. we are SO ready for our own house now!! Good luck and i hope there's a way for them to quiet down...i feel for you on this!! it drives me nuts!

yes, caught them. we lived in kind of a junky place. it wasn't hard to get in thru the windows, even if they were locked. we had a big field behind us, and i went out back one time and found a step stool, RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW. like someone had been looking in. it was horrible. but i didn't have a lease or anything, and i needed a place FAST cuz i was transferred to that town quickly. i did call the cops about them breaking in, but even though i caught them, it was my word against theirs. and nothing was taken, things were just trashed. the cops were so rude. it was a horrible situation. fortunately my job transferred me in another month. so i was outta there!

that was YEARS ago though. now we're just dealing with the dozen or so who live below us now. it's so frustrating how people can get away with stuff. we struggle to pay rent, while those who illegally have 8+ people living in a two bedroom apartment, of course THEY can pay rent, it's easy breaking up the payment then. it's just not worth ratting them out, cuz management would come investigate, and they would just lie and say they were visitors or something. when maintenance has come over to fix something, they all haul butt outside and hang out until maintenance is gone. then they don't know who exactly lives there for sure. they're sneaky. think they're so smart. it upsets me.

I used to have neighbours that were constantly banging up and down stairs, it drove me mad but, like you, I didn't want to complain. It wasn't until they swapped with my new neighbour that I realised how quiet neighbours, even with children, could be. Although I do prefer the banging up and down stairs to the horrible banging music that usually starts as soon as the sun comes out.

Hi Sweetie, Yes well as you know that I know that you moved away from where you were living, it does get annoying when people live above you and they make a lot of noise and do not seem to careless about the noise they make. Where I used to live for 17 years I had to put up with a lot of noise there I think that some of them were more than elephants lol!! Oh boy they used to make me mad.

I used to live in a downstairs apartment, and the upstairs neighbors drove me crazy. Sometimes I would take the broom handle and start hitting my ceiling with it, and it worked for a while. Then, I would turn on the stereo and hit the volume knob. Fortunately, the landlord like my music, so I was able to get away with it. I don't think Gissi would be as receptive as you if the neighbors happened to "drop in". I think he would be in a permanent grouchy sulk. LOL

My neighbours do "stump" at times, but it is only when they are shifting furnitures, or it is the kids jumping up and down and screaming like wild boars. At times, it is some quarrels. For your case, I simply cannot visualise how and why they need to stump like elephants. Have you found out what they do? Conducting a marching parade at home?

I remembered while i was studying few years back in my college, the neighbout upstair really does walk like elephant. They are not running or matching, but they walk like a very veyr heavy robot, i can feel the building is shaking when they walks. What worse, they laugh loudly like the witches whenever they want, even if it's 4am, my housemate and I did wrote a small note at their mail box asking them to tune it down, nothing happened.
