This idea has been tossed around in the media for a while now, but it's official. There is an end date set for LOST. There will be 3 more seasons of 16 eps each with the Series Finale coming in the 2009-2010 season. Unofficial is the plan to show them a la 24 - all in a row beginning in January.
My opinion: This is a good thing. It's easier to tell this kind of story with a firm idea of how long you have to tell it. It won't go the way of "X-Files" and just continue forever. Other shows have also outlived their true popularity [ER comes to mind] because they are still money makers.
I think the shows, plotlines, etc. will get tighter and more focused and that's a good thing.

I had heard from the beginning they had a number of seasons already planned and it was about five. Also that they had the whole stort line determined in advance.
I'm just glad that there is an end in sight and we will finally get some answers!

Well now we know. This is a good thing, except for the 16 episodes a season deal, kind of a bummer. I love the show but yes we all want answers to all the qustions of the island. I work when it is on so I miss the entire season and wait to buy the dvd the day it comes out. It works for me. I get caught up on my time and still enjoy a great tv show.

Wow...thanks for the info. I'm really surprised by this, as I really thought that they would wind it all up next season and it would end then. I was actually looking forward to that possibility as I would love to see some answers to what has been going on. At least now with a definite end date they can wind it all up nicely.

I won't say too much because I don't want to spoil anyone, but I have heard that there are a bunch of answers people are screaming for coming before the season is out - including some this week. Now, that's my understanding, so don't shoot the messenger if I'm wrong :).

I just read the article in the local paper about this. It's bitter sweet really. I don't want it to end, but at least we know we will get some answers.
They say this has never been done before, announcing the end of a show three years before the end. But it will allow the writers a direction and for tighter plot lines. Not just a bunch of people staring off into the ocean.
Want to guess on how it ends?

I just started a discussion similar, sorry I didn't check yours first. I am glad to hear that they are going to start wrapping it up, maybe we'll start to get more answers now.

I'm so glad that they are going to continue for at least 3 more seasons. I just started watching it and I really don't want it to end yet lol. I almost want to go and get what I've missed!

You should go get what you missed. It is confusing to me and I watched it from the beginning. You would probably understand alot more especially the background material of the people you missed. it explains ak=lot of the way they behave on the island. Rent it.

This is great news! I think that Lost definately needs an end date so that all the fans know when they will finally find out all the secrets! I hate it when they tell you that an episode will answer some of your questions and then after you have watched it you feel like it not only didnt it answer any questions you had, but instead left you with more questions! I love Lost but I would hate to see it go forever and ruin the story....

I love Lost and am glad that we have 3 more seasons to enjoy it! I can't wait to get answers- but I also don't want it to end. So 3 years will be good- I wonder what they will tell us- Is it really Hel!? Who are the Others and why are they there? Oh I love the Show!

I hope they don't rush it, like answering everything in the last few episodes. Some of the answers will take longer, considering if it were in real life, for instance it was quite easy to say that Dharma was in charge, and who was involved with who, like Jack, Jack's father, Claire, and Sawyer, Sawyer's nemesis who was Locke. But we have no idea why the Other women die in pregnancy and yet the men are incredibly fertile, why those who are are new get healed, why the longer one remains on the Island, they don't, if the food sent in by Dharma has been contaminated, or whether it is the soil and the plant life, whether the Island is in an alternate universe, or a Bermuda Triangle, whether, in spite of what the writers say, they are in purgatory or limbo, whether the Others are really aliens, etc. I mean these questions are stretching a bit, but I am sure someone has wondered why and I do not want a rush explanation in the end. As for Er, the reason it is not as popular is not because it has been dragged but they decided to bow to political correctness. The same thing has also happened to Law and Order. Political correctness says homosexuality is good and abortion is good. Lost has not been taken over by that venue, mainly because it is international and open to all views.

I agree that it is good to decide and end but I still feel another 3 series is too much. I do love the show but really the next season should be the last. This is the same with prison break. I loved the showuntil the end of season 2 and it seems they are taking a completely different road with it. All that says to me is they have run out of ideas. This is the same with lost sometimes. I feel they get lost in their own scriptwriting and some of the storylines seem to be just thrown together at the last minute.
