Have you ever experienced being lost when you were a kid?

I'm lost...help me! - Bear crying

I remember a time when I was six or seven, my family and I were in a shopping mall and there were lots of people. I was holding on to my elder sister and then suddenly, I felt her hand slipped. The next thing I know, she was gone and I was alone in a crowd. I was like, where am I? I was about to cry when my sister finally found me. I know it was only for a few minutes but I was scared. My younger sister, on the other hand, really got lost. We were in the mall near our house and she was only like 8 or 9 (at that age, she never got home by herself), she got separated from us and my mom was so worried. We paged her in the mall and everything and when my mom called our house, it turned out she went home by herself. She walked like, 10 kilometers and she had to go through the highway and lots of buses and cars. I felt so relieved and sorry for her. I imagined her walking alone and the thought that there may be some muggers on the street that could have gotten to her...I was just thankful when I saw her. So, did you ever experienced being lost when you were a kid?

yes, i got lost too. i was 8 years old then and it happened on the feast of a local patron saint. just around this time... more than two decades ago. :) i was impatiently waiting for my parents and i was totally bored. i didn't know anybody coz it was in another town (very rural) where everything is so unfamiliar. so i told the host that i would go home by following someone who lived in our town... what i didn't know was that she took a short cut and she didn't know i was following her. she went down the side of the hill, crossed two rivers, a small creek, and went up 88 steps to reach the beginning of the next town. when i finally made it to the top, she was nowhere in sight and i had no way of telling which direction she took. so i just walked on and on. for a small child the distance was enormous... :) anyway, an elderly lady who knows my family noticed me walking in the street alone. when i told her i was lost she walked me home. all in all the ordeal took 3 hours. i didn't cry during the time. but when i got home, my parents were there, so angry and worried... i experienced my father's belt the first time. that's when i cried.

Ouch, that's harsh. You got lost and still got a lashing. This is a very nice story, it seems to be still vivid in your mind. LOL. I guess if I got lost like that I'd probably remember it for the rest of my life.

Yes, when I was kid I was also lost in the vegetable market. I had gone to the vegetable market with one of my uncles, he asked me to wait in the car..till he bought the vegetable. I remember ....that I waited for few minutes and after that came out of car and entered the huge vegetable market ....looking for my uncle....could not find him for a long period...started crying...he located me after a very long time. Was 6 years ...but still remember the incident.

When I was about 4 I wanted to be like my older siblings, like to be independent and so I decided to go out to take a walk and managed to leave our house without being seen and proceeded to continue walking after I got to the end of the street and ended up about 5 miles away and some lady noticed I was by myself and because I was always told not to talk to strangers of course I wouldn't give her my name or phone number but somehow the nice policeman got it out of me and I had no idea what the commotion I caused; my mother and father were frantic with worry, my sisters got yelled at, and the change I got from the nice policeman after he dropped me off at home for an ice cream was promptly absconded by my Mom wanting to discipline me for taking off and I only remember being angry when being tucked into bed that I wasn't going to get my ice cream. Needless to say that's the only time I remember leaving my safe home because I do remember other such times when I ate 3 delicious home-cooked meals daily as well as all the times I had all kinds of snacks (never gaining weight in my childhood because I always remember eating good balanced meals). I was always taken care of, I just wanted to go for a walk by myself. I'll never forget that memory and I thank you for allowing me to share my real-life story of being lost when I was a kid.

LOL My mom took a picture of me"lost". I was sitting on a bench crying, and she was about 4 feet in front of me. I was even looking RIGHT at the camera. I was so scared I did not see them there.

I also do that to my nephews whenever he's with me. I know it's mean but we always show ourselves whenever we feel like he's about to cry.

I was really lost at first. When my mom found me she knew I had not seen her yet, so she snapped the photo. I wish I had it so I could show you. I looked so sad, and afraid, but she was only a few feet away. We were at Ruby Falls I think, all I remember is getting lost and that is probably because of seeing the pic all my life, and hearing the story.

Yes, once when I was very small. I was about 5 years old and I was in the library with my father. Our deal was that I stayed in the children's section upstairs until he came to get me (we went every Monday evening). Well, one evening I was feeling brave and thought I could go downstairs and find my father myself. I was wrong and I quickly started crying because I just couldn't find him. Some people noticed me and started asking what was wrong and my father must have heard the commotion as he quickly ran up to me. Let's just say I was very relieved to see him!

Oh, I think I remember a time when I was asked to stay where I was but still I followed my parents. Good thing they saw me though or that would have been my second experience being lost.

To be honest with you I can't ever remember being lost as a child. Being one of nine children my parents always made one of the older children look after us younger ones. The older siblings knew better then to lose one of the younger ones because of not wanting to make our father mad. There was once when I was about two that my grandmother allowed us to go to the park which was right by her house to play my older siblings put me in to a swing so that I couldn't wander off while they played. When they went home they left me in the swing.

I really don't recall ever being lost as a kid but I have had a moment where I lost one of my kids. We were at Disneyland and we were going down an escalator. My daughter let go of my hand and refused to go down just as we were stepping on. I yelled at her to wait and I'd go back and get her. I went back up and she was gone....I searched around and couldn't find her...after a few minutes I went back down and she was there...someone had taken her down and was waiting for us there....it was the most terrifying moment of my life.

Yeah, I couldn't imagine. I mean I just get scared when I though I lost my wallet in the mall and the feeling would probably be multiplied by a hundred fold.

LOL..I think that is the classic one, surely everyone has been lost in a mall. I remember I was, I was so scared. But looking back now it was funny. You see kids now lost at the mall crying and you just feel sorry for them, because you know what it is like.

Oh yeah, I feel so sorry for those kids. There was one time that I wanted to bring the kid to the paging counter but her mom suddenly appeared.

I'm not sure how old I was, but I do remember this time I was lost...I had gone to the town centre to do some shopping with mom and Spud (my uncle) and Spud went into a store and told me to stay in this one isle. Now, just like most kids, I did not do this and wandered around, and then could not remember where I was supposed to meet Spud. I walked out of the store crying and this old man saw me and took me to the customer services desk, where I was reunited with my uncle. To say that I was terrified would have been putting it lightly...and I never trusted Spud again, even to this day.

LOL. Good thing your mom didn't tell of Spud. I would have blown my top if I knew my sibling nearly lost my child.

i got lost when my family and i were looking for toys in this big toy store. i was about 6 or 7 yrs old. i got stuck up on the toy that i was looking at. then when i was done playing with it, i became aware that i was really lost. i almost cried and i was shouting their names out loud. everyone was looking at me and they looked worried. then when i saw them, they were laughing at me and they said that they were just hiding from me. i then cried after that, while my siblings were laughing at me. That's mean, but like I said, I also do that to my nephews/nieces. Now as I think about it, maybe that's not such a nice joke. LOL.

I was little bit younger, about 4 or 5 and it happened in this open area church. it was a big area and there were plenty of pilgrims that time. although i have a vague idea of this happening, my mom can totally recall this incident. I got separated from them and they were frantically searching for me in the vicinity. when they went out to the parking lot, i was there waiting for them in the car. and i was like, "where did you go? why did you get lost?" in a really innocent, calm way. haha!

Yes. I believe I was around 5 or 6, this is one of the earliest memories I can remember. We were at some kind of shopping store, that had racks of clothes and also some food products and stuff like that. I remember hiding under one of the racks of clothes, and she paid for her stuff and left me! I started to cry and panic, and a couple of minutes later she obviously realized and came back looking for me. I was so sad that I got lost like that though, I remember crying for hours after I got home!

Yes that was the most memorable moment in my life. I got lost in the shopping mall too. I was supposed to be walking with my parents but something (can't remember what is it) caught my attention and I stopped walking. Apparently my parents didn't notice that I wasn't by their side. When I turned back, they were gone. I wasn't panic and went to the information counter. However I did not know what to say and started panicking. I cried so loud that my parents heard my cries and found me while they were searching for me.

It's nice that you know where to go. We weren't trained like that when we were kids but with my nephews and nieces, we always tell them to go to the security guards or saleslady if ever they got lost.

Yes, I was about six at the time we were holidaying in Fleetwood which is a seaside place near Blackpool in the UK, we were staying in a caravan in a very large caravan site and you know when you are young all caravans look alike especially to a six year old, anyhow I went wondering off to play but when it was time to return I couldn't find our caravan, I wondered around getting worried that mum would be missing me, so I managed to find the public house on site and I went in. I got a lovely ride in the jeep back to my caravan where my mum was going frantic! All I kept on about was can I have another ride in the jeep, to me it was a big adventure to mum it must have been a big nightmare!

Yup, I had a similar experience too when I was around six years old. It was also at a shopping mall and I had to go to the little boys room and my mom said she'll be right here standing when I come out. Well, guess what? I did my business and come part but apparently the shopping bug bit her. Panicking, I started crying and to make a not-so-long-story short, was reunited with my mom about half an hour later when the receptionist made a public announcement. moms...
