Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, city in north-eastern India, capital of West Bengal state, on the River Hugli, near the Bay of Bengal. One of the world’s most crowded and colourful cities, Kolkata is located close to sea level in a formerly swampy area. It has a subtropical climate and is known for its heat and humidity during the summer rainy season. The hub of a metropolitan area (being India’s second-most populous city), Kolkata is a major port and the commercial, financial, and manufacturing centre of eastern India. The city changed its name from Calcutta to Kolkata in 1999. Population 13,216,546 (2001).

I love visiting Calcutta from the UK every year for a few weeks. It might be overcrowded but I don't particularly notice it (apart from the traffic at all times of the day). The people are welcoming and hospitable and intellectual. I feel proud to be a Bengali, I often wish I had as much intellect as my fellow Bengalis LOL!
