How can anyone support someone like Saddam Hussein?

I watch the news and see night clubs where they cheer and yell for Saddam Hussein. Now I'm all for freedom of speech and freedom of choice, etc. but my question is HOW can any human being cheer for a man that THEY WATCHED destroy their own people?
He ran a government of fear!
Truly, what would a person be thinking to accept this kind of behaviour?

A government of fear was the one thing needed to keep that mess in order there, even people which lost relatives to Hussein now think it was better with Hussein in place than what is going on now. As terrible as his actions appeared to the western world you should not forget that he wasn't the biggest mess in the country by himself but together with a lot of radicals combined which now are going on a free rampage and there is nothing to stop them.
With Americans wanting to pull their soldiers out of Iraq rather than send more troops many Iraqis can already foresee what is going to happen, the Americans will pull out after the next president is elected and the country will remain in civil war resulting in an amount of deaths combined with the Iraqi war which goes well beyond what Hussein could ever have achieved.
Although it is no fair to the decent people living there, Hussein was like the top dog as you'd see in prisons, if the top dog gets killed there'd be a state of civil uproar which can't be stopped with no matter what you do till a new one grabs power. Having some guards step in and trying to change that all of the sudden will simply not work, let stand that it'll work on the level of an entire nation.

The same way people support President Bush. The man who have sent many of peoples children to fight a war that only him and his daddies people wanted.
If you look in his eyes you will see he is just like Saddam he has evil in his heart while he speaks peace that is a laugh. I don't like him and I did not vote for him he is a killer just as Saddam. God Bless

I'm sorry, Bush is no where close to the type of person Hussein is. I understand that you're not supportive, I'm not either, but he has never sat and watched someone tortured, raped and mawled. Hussein is not just a killer, he is a psychotic killer that admires seeing human pain first hand. There is video of this man watching another man be dunked into a pot of boiling oil feet first, not head first because that kills him too quickly. Like him or not I don't care who you like you cannot put the U.S. President in the same category.

Anyone that supports someone as horrible as him must be sick as well. There is definitely something wrong with people that support killing of innocent people and putting fear into the lives of many people throughout the world. It does not make any sense why he would be like that and why people would cheer for him. They obviously worship the devil, in my opinion, and not God. Their beliefs are much different than other countries.

You dont say in what country. If is in the US or another traditionally non-Muslim country then no I couldn't understand it. However if it is in a Muslim country there is no telling why they do what they do.

Basically in HIS OWN country. They were showing people in a night club and they were chanting his name and honoring him. I was astounded because human beings are human beings and I cannot fathom anyone of the human race EVER thinking his behaviour is "typical" or "acceptable". But as many have mentioned here... many of his followers or most I would say have had great success under his reign and the money speaks to them.

I didn't see what you've described but chances
are it comes from those who lived privileged
lives under his dictatorship. If everything was
wonderful in their lives they wouldn't care about
the underprivileged. Again, I didn't see what you
saw but that's the typical psychological explanation.
Remember, privilege in the Middle East isn't as we
view it here in the west.

True. I'm sure there were tons of people who lived the good life under his reign that now aren't catered to. The scenes they showed on our news was in a night club/disco type place and my guess is that people over there that can afford that are probably considered the wealthy and probably got their wealth at the expense of others.
Excellent point.

There were groups of people who lived well under Saddham by oppressing others. The same is true of Cuba and the old Soviet Union. Those are the people you see. For the rest, It is hard to live through a situation like that where things will always get worse before they get better.
In their heads they have to be wondering if it has all been a mistake and the old way was much more familiar and stable. Because their faith and their president kept such a tight control how much of the outside world they were truly aware of , it was easy to convince his supporters that they were superior and the others were less than human and dangerous to their way of life.

True. Money does speak louder then actions to many. It's amazing how much a human can overlook when they see a dollar bill flashing beyond the horror right in front of their eyes!

i honestly have difficulty working out why anyone could support this evil man. The nearest i can get to it is that it represents a type of racism, resistance in the face of the infidel. Look at it this way, your country is invaded, your towns are bombed and your life daily under threat from what seems like an alien force. Imagine America losing Bush to an Iraqi invasion and you get the idea
blessed be

Oh I'm definitely not saying they should agree with Bush and all.. just questioning how they could even begin to think Hussein was an acceptable excuse for a human being!

I would say fear for sure. A lot of those demonstrations when he was alive and ruling, were staged. Today if you see it it is probably former baath party members trying to rally the insurgency. Some people , very few in fact, who did well under his rule may wish for a return to the old days. he ruled with an iron fist and those in his party did well. Plenty of money, protection, free health care (although i understand that healthcare was available to all) but what kind of price is that to lose your freedom of thought?

There are a ton of reasons why leaders get support from the people. Some leaders are charismatic and seem to sway the people with wonderful speeches. Take a look at Obama (US president hopeful) I am not American and I wish I could vote for him. He is so patriotic his speeches make me almost cry with pride (and I'm not even American!).
Some leaders lead through fear. They will kill you if you say anything against them. Then there are leaders that get people to "believe" them by bribery these people do not believe the leader but will surround the leader because he is giving them money, riches, fame, etc...
Some leaders only have followers because the people want something to believe in, they want someone to follow. They want to belong.
There are lots of different reasons and I could continue but I think I've yammered on enough about that.
I think the people who followed Saddam did so for several reasons. He was a smart man, he was shrewd and cruel. He got to a position of power by being mean and smart and cunning. If you lived in this country would you rather not have this man either on your side or nuetral or as an enemy?

True, very true. The people of HIS land were given propaganda that made him look wonderful, intelligent and caring about his people while those of us in other countries were only privy to his horrors and never submitted to his propaganda.
Excellent points.

Sure makes you wonder why so many people flock to America to live a good life then. You obviously DO hate America and I'm certain it's because of your own ignorance of what it truly is about. But in the same aspect, most hate is bred from ignorance. If we take the time to learn about those who are different then us perhaps we would realize we're not all so completely different as we think.
The great part about America is that if you don't like it, you don't have to come here and reap it's benefits. Stay in your own country and cry about how horrible America is to the rest of the world while every other country hold their hand out for help every time they have crisis.
Personally, I think America is ignorant. We should have realized long ago that as long as you are number 1 in the world the rest of the world will love to hate you simply because they want to BE you. What we should have done is close off our borders and tell the rest of the world to fend for itself and see how well they'd all do. But lucky for the rest of the world we've maintained our Christian attitude and turn the other cheek.

Oh I fully agree that unless you are there and experiencing it yourself you are given only what they want you to see.... from either point of view, theirs or ours. But in either case do you think it's ignorance that kept them from seeing the torture that makes them accept it? But from what they say, there were so many tortured and killed, etc. that it would be hard NOT to know someone first hand who was affected.

I can't say I'm FOR Bush but I can't say he's anything even remotely close to what a horrible creature Hussein was! And you would think that now that the people there have seen that there are fewer tortures and rapes, etc. amongst their own they would realize that it's time to choose someone with morals and kindness and intelligence to lead them into a successful nation.

Well, the US and British governments supported him and originally provided Saddam Hussein with his initial WMD, as long as the man was complying to their demands! So, now, do you care to ask both the US and British governments what they were thinking? And please, be kind enough to share the response with us all, would you. Thanks!
