Changing recognition

after installing a new dvd rewriter everything was looking good, my pc recognised the hardware as a dvd rewriter, but as soon as I put in a blank dvd, the system changes it recognition to a cd-rom, this has happened on an internal and external dvd rewiter, anybody got any clues?
