At what age do you feel is appropriate to take that pacifier away? I don't know why, but it really bugs me when I see a 3-5 year old in the store with a pacifier in their mouth. What is your take on this, because I'm just trying to make sure I'm not going over board on the issue.

I think around 1 and a half years is just about the upper limit, sooner than that, even better. My daughter sucks her thumb, she's already one and nothing i do discourages her, am worried about that.

I would say around one, my son decided he didn't want it when he was 6 months old so I feel lucky. My niece on the other hands was one of those kids running around the store, trying to talk with one in her mouth-I think that's ridiculous!

Yes, you said it...RIDICULOUS! I just don't get it. I'd rather they carry around a blanky or stuffed animal for comfort. But I guess on the plus side it's better than their thumb or fingers, since eventually a pacifier can be "mysteriously" lost or thrown away. Thanks for responding to my discussion.

I absolutely hate that. Ther was this litle girl probably 5 ahe picked up a pacifier and stuck it on her mouth. I guess I got lucky because my daughter hated the pacifier. So I had no problems, but If she did I would have just thrown it away as soon as she got her first tooth.

Well, I had one of those kids who kept a pacifier until she was about 3 1/2. We tried several times to get rid of it, including cutting the end off, but she was very insecure without it. I don't know why. She was loved, hugged and given lots of affection, so I don't know why she felt the need for it.
We took a long trip and forgot to bring the pacifier. We talked to her about it and told her we wouldn't buy another one. She was awful that trip, but fine when we got home. Maybe we just didn't give enough time before to let her get it out of her system.
Anyway, our other daughter didn't want a pacifier, but she has sucked her thumb. I see kids around 5 or 6 still sucking their thumbs. I guess if they need it they need it. Who am I to say?
