i grew up praying and it seems to come naturally to me i looked up 'pray' in the dictionary and amongst other meanings i found -thanks-giving -to request earnestly or emotionally is it not human to often be thankful and to wish for things, where's the contradiction?

I do find it a bit of a contradiction, because If I am not mistaken an atheist does not believe that god exists. That being said Who are you giving thanks to, or having a emotional appeal to?Is is it possible that you are confused about what you are May I suggest that you look the definition as to what is an atheist and an agnostic. I personally do not hold any religious beliefs other than there has to be a creator, All the rest in my mind is speculation, and not provable. But I ask no one to believe as I do. And yes I do give thanks and do pray for guidance.

you believe in a higher power don't you?:)to whom you pay your thanx?an athiest think there is nothing divine,no one to thank for life or other things so they dont thank anyone.
