now we get these exchange traded funds where you can hold gold in its purest form without fearing to lose it
do you think one should invest here

It is hard to say, since gold prices are pretty static but in the past we have seen changes to that being drastic. It could easily be that one day gold will lose it's popularity and something else will be seen as the new gold, your assets would plummet drastically then.
