How much stuff does a parent need to take for a weekend getaway? We are getting ready to take a trip with my girlfriends children. We will be leaving Thursday night and won't get back till Sunday evening.I know I will have to live without mylot for several days but that is another discussion in itself. Anyway she already has three suitcases filled and hasn't even packed either of our stuff yet. How much stuff does three children require for a three day trip? They are five, seven, and eight years old.

It depends on what you are doing and what the weather is. Granted, you don't need the diaper bag or baby carriages, but you still might need bulky blankies. If it is cold you might need heavy clothes and shoes and extra spares. If you are going on a swimming holiday, there could be wetsuits, snorkels, towels, all the like. With three kids that could be A LOT. I personally like packing light, but with kids, you always need extra and then you usually only use half the stuff and realise you should have brought other things all together.

We are going to a family reunion. Most of the time we will be locked up in a building visiting people I am sure. The children are all over five years but I didn't realize that she would need to pack more then one outfit a day for each child.I have checked the weather report is surpose to be nice and sunny. I figured she could pack them one pair of pants each just in case the report was wrong. I have never traveled with children like this before. I am out of my element.

In that case I would bring a pair of pyjamas for each, underclothes for each day, 2 pairs of pants (or skirts or whatever) and 3 shirts, plus the clothes they arrive in. I hope those three suitcases are little because it sounds like packing for 3 weeks rather than three days.
Good luck!

Well, I now know not to question how much stuff she brings for the children. The kids went through every piece of clothing she brought them.

Children require LOTS and LOTS of stuff for a 3 day trip! Especially at those ages. I guess by the time you read this you will be back from your trip. They need stuff to keep them entertained, they need stuff to keep them safe, they need stuff to keep them clothed. Is this a car trip? You gotta post how the trip went! I love reading your discussions. Sometimes it seems that you are baffled by children.
It seems that you have never had children of your own and I wonder if you were an only child...

It's sounds like a great time. I know what you mean about mountains and kids. When my kids were little we did some sightseeing in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a bit of a fear of heights. There were some lookout points that we went to. I was terrified and was holding on to my kids for dear life. Even now that they are getting older, I still get nervous. We were in Colorado last summer. My daugther was 13 my son was 10. I was still nervous and telling them to stay back from the edge of the lookout.

I was an only child. I have two boys of my own, one is twenty and the other is seventeen. I never went on vacation like this with my own boys. We normal just did one day trips.
This weekend I learned not to question how much stuff she packs for the children. She had everything down to a science. The only things we had to buy while we were gone was gas and food. We bought souveniers for the children to pass out to family and friends when we got back.
We spent several hours looking at the Cumberland Falls and exploring the trails around them. That alone made the trip worth it. Then one of her relatives took us up into the mountains to see where there was a class held in a cave. You never want to climb the side of the mountain with a young child. A three day trip just wasn't enough time to see everything. The children are planning next years trip already. They love it down there.
