Do you use home remedies?

In responding to another post, home remedies came up. You know, the things your grandparents used when they were ill. Like peppermint tea for an upset stomach, or flaxseed for a toothache. I find that I still use the ones my Grandmother showed me. So do you use home remedies and if so what?

Yes, i still do. Our government has cited 10 approved herbal medicine as a way of promoting alternative medicine. One is garlic for lowering high blood pressure.

I wish ours would do that. But it would cut into big company profits.

I don't see why home remedies should be any less effective than ones sold in a chemist, since they have been tired 7 tested throuhgout generations. I do like to drink peppermint tea for indigestion, and i also take garlic capsules to boost my immune system and lower my blood pressure. I also like to sue essential oils, lavender is useful to put on a burn, tea tree is good at disinfecting cuts, citronella is a good insect repellant, and eucalyptus is good for coughs and colds.

It amazes me that home remedies are looked down on by some people. Thanks for the response

Home remedies are tried and true and they are passed down from generation to generation. If they didn't work I don't think they would have made it thus far, being passed down by so many generations. I love them. I still use the ones my grandmother passed down to us. I even did research and found more from my great grandparents and others. They are awesome. Many of the traditional remedies I use in our family are passed down from the Cherokee Nation. Indian remedies like getting stung by an ant or wasp - chew up the leaves of an elm and apply the chewed up leaves to the sting - the sting goes away instantly. Yarrow tea is a favorite of mine - it is a good cleanser, diaretic, and helps the mind stay focused - much like St. John's Wart. Potato poltice is great too for a sprain ankle or to remove swelling. There are so many. Eucalyptus is soothing when boiled and kept steeping on the stove. So is a pot of citrus skins mixed with cinnamon. Gosh, I didn't realize I use so many. I could go on and on.

I have never heard about using elm leaves for stings. That would really come in handy when we camp. Thanks.

Yes. The elder women in my life were all Queens of the Home Remedy. I learned many that I still use today-and have passed on to my adult daughters. Cloves are good for toothache also. An eardrop solution made with peroxide/water for earache. A teaspoon of sugar and bourbon for menstrual cramps. A mixture of soda/vinegar/sugar/water for indigestion. Believe it or not they all work well.

I know they work. I will use a home remedy before anything else.
