it really made my day. this has happened about 3 times to me, and they've never been English. completely in a non sleazy way, just conversational and friendly, and because they want to let you know they think you look nice that day. and it's sad that English men never tell you that unless they are your partner, or trying to flirt with you. I wonder why English men never tell someone if they think they are beautiful. because it's such a lovely thing to have someone tell you.

It is great when you get an unexpected compliment. I know it makes my day as well. I think it is because it is out of the ordinary adn we don't expect it. I like to give compliments when I see that they are due to guys and girls alike. By doing so I have gotten a few smiles and thanks but there have been a couple times that people thought I was flirting with them.

Well, i'd like to say firstly that from your piccy you are indeed a lurvely looking lady (don't worry i'm sleezy, or male, or lesbian, or trying to flirt etc, lol!). I reckon it's all that Lush ;-) Anyway, back to the question. I think maybe Englishmen are a bit shy and reserved. Maybe also embarassed too. I also think they don't want to say anything in case us English women take it the wrong way and think the man is coming on to us, or ust being sleezy. I find it hard to imagine an English fella randomly coming up to me and just saying i look beautiful unless he wants something, if you know what i mean. It's just now what English men do i'm afraid!

exactly. it's just not part of the culture here. a shame because it really does put a spring in your step

Lucky for you, I love getting unexpected compliments like that! But like you, it is never from English men (unless they are my friends and they've had a bit to drink!) I think it must be the culture, men are afraid they'll look sleazy or that we'll laugh in their faces. They must be intimidated by women and their looks! x

Yes,you said it,praising others is a nice thing. And sometimes a beautiful words can make one have a whole happy day.So i think we should not stint our praise.Telling a woman she is beautiful is just as sending her a flower.I think english men do not often praise others unless they are their partners, may because they are a little conservative.

In Italy men are very different. They tell you every five minuts that you're beautiful. Perhaps you should change country...it's a great satisfaction to receive so often compliments.

I'm happy for you! What a lovely thing to say to anyone. English men are far too shy to say anything nice incase they get a mouthful of abuse, bless them.

Well, that's because you ARE beautiful!! It does give you a boost though when someone lets you know that they think you are beautiful. I work in a hospital and almost all of my patients are older gentlemen so I get compliments almost every day. The older men still seem to know what to say to make a girl feel good;) The younger generation of American men need to take some advice from their grandparents in my opinion!LOL!

I got have one for you. I was in Walmart parking lot having a smoke. A woman kept staring at me and smiling. Finaly she said, " You know, you have the most perfectly shaped head I have ever seen". I chuckled and thanked her. I have to say, that is the first time I ever heard that on. I assume it was a compliment so that's how I took it. It did kinda make my day though.

It's always wonderful to get a compliment of any kind and yes can really make your day especially when you might need a pick me up...But I don't think it's just English men who are reserved in giving a compliment to a woman unless they're trying to be flirty...ah, American men can be the same way!
